Dealing with Difficult SMEs

Even with all your diligence, planning and commitment to the project, you may encounter SMEs who don't meet their obligations. See if these sound familiar to you…

  • They know it all. They want to be in charge and they don't see your value.
  • They are rarely available or they're late with most of their reviews.
  • They don't think they're the right SME for the project and they don't see how they can help.
  • They refuse to help. They are wedded to the things "we've always done this way" and have an "in your face" confrontational style.
  • They worry about the project. And they constantly inquire about deadlines.
  • They inundate you with information or they don't want to help you weed through for the key content.
  • They show no interest in the project and they're reluctant to participate. It's just one more job for them.
  • Or maybe they nit-pick everything and want to make lots of superfluous changes.
