Dealing with Bereavement at Work

Dealing with Bereavement at Work

Last Friday, I received the heartbreaking news that Andre Padayachie , a former colleague and dear friend, had passed away after battling a terminal illness. Though we were aware of his condition, the reality of his passing still felt sudden and difficult to comprehend. Andre and I worked together a few years ago, and while our paths diverged professionally, we maintained a close friendship and the news of his loss has deeply affected those of us who knew him.

In the wake of his passing, Andre’s employer offered meaningful support to his family, pledging to cover his children’s school expenses and reassuring his wife that she will always remain part of the organisation’s extended family.

This act of compassion demonstrates the organization’s commitment to standing by its people, even in the most difficult times, and offers comfort to those close to Andre.

Having faced workplace loss before, I’ve had the opportunity to observe how different organizations handle bereavement. Several years ago, another dear colleague passed away suddenly after 16 years of dedicated service. Despite promises from her employer to establish a student fund in her honour, this never materialized. That experience taught me the importance of not only making meaningful commitments but following through on them.

When a valued employee passes, the challenge for any organization is twofold: how to support employees who are grieving, and how to ensure that work continues during this difficult time. While it’s never easy, it is essential to address the situation openly and compassionately. Here are a few key considerations for organizations dealing with the loss of an employee:

Key Considerations when dealing with Bereavement in the Workplace

Dealing with loss in the workplace is never easy, but it is a reality many organizations face at some point. How an organization responds—whether by offering genuine support or following through on promises—can have a lasting impact on the emotional well-being of its employees. A thoughtful and compassionate approach helps people cope with their grief and also strengthens the workplace community, ensuring that the employee’s legacy continues to inspire and guide.

I completely understand what you mean by a supportive employer through grief Shakti Naidoo . My new company have been so supportive since I’ve been here, showing understanding and compassion as I cared for my uncle in his end of life stages, with time off to spend with him and to process my feelings after he passed with no pressure on returning too soon. It’s refreshing to work for a company that actually puts their employees first and doesn’t just claim that they do. How is NZ treating you?

This is an amazing but tearful read. Handling grief and bereavement is a challenge itself but being part of an organization that supports you is incredible. Grateful and thankful ??
