Deaf and dumb….are we?

As usual, I am back with one of my observations during my train journeys.

One late evening, I got down at the station and started the long walk towards the end of the platform.  As I walked briskly, my eyes fell on a middle aged couple sitting on the bench and laughing together.  Nothing unusual, but soon I saw that they were speaking to each other in the sign language. They conversed something really funny and could not stop laughing.

This is not the first time I have seen these specially-abled people converse with each other.  I have seen two talkative girls in the handicapped train compartment yapping nineteen to a dozen, in the sign language and many more.

When the specially-abled can communicate so loudly and clearly, we normal people should be doing much better, isn’t it?

But do we?

How many “I love yous”, “I cannot take this anymore”, “I am so happy I wanted to share it with you”, “Mom, you know what happened at school today”, “Son, I wanted to spend some time with you”, have we missed listening or responding to?

How many times have we listened to the other person to understand and not just to reply?

How many times have we missed saying what we really wanted to say and could not due to “no time”?

How many times have we taken the first step to either clear a misunderstanding or just say a sorry?

How many times have we not said anything and yet understood everything?

How many times have we really listened? How many times have we really spoken?

The difference between them and us, as far as I can see

They can’t hear….we don’t listen….

They can’t speak….we don’t talk….

Deaf and dumb…. Can we not be?
