Typhoon Hagibis left at least 30 dead, almost 180 injured and several missing in Japan. The storm made landfall south of Tokyo on Saturday night and battered central and northern parts of Japan. Japan’s most powerful storm in decades, which followed September's Typhoon Faxai, cut power for 425,000 homes, suspended flights and trains, and forced millions to evacuate. Over the weekend, two Rugby World Cup matches were cancelled and many businesses closed their doors. The death toll is expected to climb as at least 142 rivers are swollen and rushing through neighbourhoods. ? Here's what people are saying.

While President Trump announced the U.S. agreed to a “very substantial phase one deal” with China, details of the agreement are still unclear. In exchange for America scrapping tariff increases that were slated for Oct 15, the Chinese government offered to buy American agricultural products and to address its intellectual property rules. Chinese media didn't describe it as a deal, but instead as substantial progress, according to The Economist. And a big question remains for American businesses: while it appears the situation is improving, will this ceasefire hold or will it collapse? ? Dyson will eliminate its entire automotive division of over 500, including 20 in Singapore. The UK-based vacuum cleaner maker is winding down its project to build electric cars, after developing one and finding that it was not commercially viable. The firm had announced earlier this year plans to move its global headquarters from UK to Singapore, and hire 2,000 people across Southeast Asia in addition to what was then 6,000 globally. Dyson says it plans to find alternative roles for the affected workers. Here’s what people are saying.

Female entrepreneurs in Hong Kong and Singapore are most likely to be denied funding, an HSBC study of 1,202 entrepreneurs in seven markets has found. Some 68% and 59% of women entrepreneurs in Hong Kong and Singapore respectively have faced such rejections, compared with the global rate of 50% for women and 58% for men. The lower level of success in the two markets likely has to do with a lack of women on investment boards in Hong Kong, as well as limited capital relative to other markets in Singapore. ? The one talent that rules them all? Self-control: Recruiters and hiring managers often prize qualities like curiosity and drive when they talk about the kind of workers they desire. But the ability companies should desire most — the trait that makes all the other coveted qualities that much more powerful — is self-control, according to Fast Company. Such restraint increases our focus, our ability to learn new things and our resilience. It also indicates that an employee will have enough discipline to steer clear of ethical lapses in high-stress situations. ? Here’s what people are saying.

Idea of the DayIf you assign the wrong person to help you achieve your goal and you suffer the consequences, it’s your fault – not theirs, says Ray Dalio, founder, co-CIO and co-Chairman of Bridgewater Associates.

"When putting someone in a position of responsibility, make sure their incentives are aligned with their responsibilities and they experience the consequences of the outcomes they produce."
