A Deadly Personal Branding Mistake That Can Ruin Your Business

I recently got a question from someone which says
"Should I make my personal brand as I am, or on that space where I can get the most money?"
This is a direct question which says
"Should I be myself or should I change my identity for money?"
When we are dating someone new for the very first time, we always try to portray our best selves. Maybe our apartments look a little cleaner than they normally do.
Or maybe our work would instantly turn more fascinating and impressive than they were last week.
This approach will help you gain somebody's interest in small quantities and create a deeper relationship. Taken so far, for the sake of maintaining a friendship, you risk being something that you are not.
Now, think of dating as personal branding. If you selectively display your good side online, you are giving yourself the best opportunity to get the attention of your clients.
Humans tend to create a perception of you as quickly as they see you. it's an inevitable survival mechanism we have inherited from the primal apes to see if someone is a real threat or not.
So if you say "I don't judge a book by its cover", I don't trust you. You cannot control this automatic process of judging someone. So when you will be out there,
People Will Judge You. Guaranteed...
but if you only show your perfect and professional side, they may get intrigued and put you in the "The Perfect Human" box in their mind.
You will have 2 problems doing this
- People won't be able to connect with you because they are not perfect but you seem perfect.
- In the long term when people will find (they will find out for sure) you have the flaws that you portrayed that you don't, they will feel you have changed and you will lose their trust. And when you lose your trust, you cannot sell to them anymore.
So whenever you are branding yourself, Always show your real side. this is the only way you can be authentic, build rapport, and create an unbreakable brand.

4 年Interesting subject. Both have their own pros and cons. However, of you are in for a long haul game, i totally agree with your concluding statement.
