De-Stigmatizing Language Around Substance Disorders

De-Stigmatizing Language Around Substance Disorders

Whether you are aware of it or not, we all hold biases and stigmas that affect our perceptions of the world and the people in our communities. Parents with substance disorders face an extremely negative set of stigmas around their substance use and familial relationships. These stigmas are often intensified when parents are people of color, adding further layers of discrimination to their life experiences.??

By addressing the existing stigmas and reshaping our perspectives, collectively we can create inclusivity and opportunity for treatment and recovery for parents and children. Oftentimes, parents that are struggling with substance use disorders refrain from seeking help due to being judged and the potential of losing custody their children.??

After acknowledging our biases and stigmas, the question arises – how can we deconstruct these stigmas and foster positivity for those struggling with substance use disorders? One way is to change the language we use. Stigmatizing language such as phrases like “addicts” or “junkies” creates a judgmental narrative. Instead, using phrases such as “person experiencing a substance use disorder” humanizes the person’s experiences. Humanizing people’s struggles and removing judgement allows openness and help to be accepted societally.??

At the Snohomish County’s CASA Office, we serve to help advocate for children in families that are experiencing substance use disorders. Our goal is for every child to have a safe and loving permanent home, which can look like family reunification, guardianship or adoption.
