De Anne's Deep Dive into Talent Acquisition

De Anne's Deep Dive into Talent Acquisition

About Me?

My name is De Anne Russell. I currently live in Payson, AZ, and I am the System Vice President of Talent Acquisition for CommonSpirit Health's West Region and National Offices. I lead a team of almost 150 Talent Acquisition Professionals passionate about staffing the facilities and locations they support with the most talented healthcare professionals to provide exceptional and compassionate patient care to those in their communities.

When I'm not at work, I love to spend time outside with my family. Whether I'm hiking, camping, lying on a beach, or simply sitting on the porch in my favorite chair, I love being out in the elements and enjoying nature's gifts. I also have a love for travel. From jumping into our RV and taking a road trip across the country to experiencing a new country and culture, I love to experience small towns, big cities, and other countries and cultures worldwide. Regardless of where I travel, kindness is part of the universal language, and that is what I am about.

Another thing about me is my favorite season is the "F" season - Fall, Football, Family, and Friends! Nothing is better than seeing the leaves change colors, experiencing the change in the weather, watching football, and spending time with family and friends during the holidays. As the year-end rapidly approaches, the fall is one of my favorite times to ensure that I have made memories for others, as I am so grateful for all who have touched my life.

What do you love most about your job?

My favorite part of my job is leading my team and being an inspirational leader that fosters excellent work. With a team of more than 150 people across the country and in all time zones, I pride myself on being accessible to my team to serve as a mentor, thought partner, and friend. I love spending time with them, brainstorming on creative recruitment strategies, and educating them on the ever-changing talent acquisition industry!

What are some strategies you employ to ensure consistency and quality in hiring across different locations nationwide?

Consistency and quality in hiring are essential to what we do. The best strategy is to bring ourselves, our family, and our friends into the equation. We often ask questions such as: What type of candidate experience would we want for ourselves, our friends, or family to experience throughout a job seeker journey? Would we want the individual under consideration at CommonSpirit Health to play a role in one's healthcare journey? It's the moments that matter, and asking ourselves these questions as recruiters helps us ensure consistency and quality.

What qualities and skills do you look for in candidates to ensure they align with CommonSpirit’s commitment to patient care, compassion, and humankindness?

At CommonSpirit Health, our mission statement is to make the healing presence of God known in our world by improving the health of the people we serve, especially those who are vulnerable. At the same time, we advance social justice for all. Our recruiters must look for the qualities and skills demonstrating a candidate's commitment to our ministry, for example, a passion for helping, a commitment to listen, and dedication to kindness. But most importantly, we look for their "Y" - their story of why healthcare, humankindness, and CommonSpirit Health. You can learn a lot about someone from their "Y".

What attracted you to want to work at CommonSpirit? Why do you stay?

What attracted me to CommonSprit Health was the ministry. While passionate about matching job seekers with their dream job, recruitment in the healthcare industry felt more meaningful. Rather than hiring an individual to make an organization money, at CommonSpirit Health, we are hiring individuals to make a difference in the lives of others when it matters most. Whether we’re bringing life into the world, improving the quality of life for others, or being part of an individual's life-ending journey, what we do touches the lives, hearts, and memories of all.

What would you tell entry-level healthcare professionals who are just starting their careers?

Working in healthcare is like working for a little city. In addition to patient-facing roles such as doctors, nurses, therapists, and technicians, we have our own police/security, fire, mail, facilities, maintenance, and culinary professionals. Regardless if you are a healthcare provider or one who supports the healthcare delivery systems, you can make a difference in the lives of others every day. Directly or indirectly, it feels incredible to know that you have impacted the lives of others.?
