DBT Skills for Recruiters: Wise Mind

As Recruiters and Business Developers, we want and need to be able to show up to every interaction being authentic and connect emotionally in a professional context.

Doing this day in day out has a whole host of complications from getting burnt out to feeling like you're stuck on an emotional rollercoaster.

For those of us that have been doing this for long enough, it's clear that keeping a cool head and pushing forward is a kind of Recruitment superpower that leads to lasting success.

So how do you balance your emotions and your rational mind to be effective in as a Recruiter?

What is Wise Mind?

Wise Mind is the idea that individuals need to balance both their rational, intellectual side, commonly known as the ‘rational mind’, and their emotional side, known as the ‘emotional mind’. This balance creates a truly wise perspective, hence the name "Wise Mind".

When these two parts of ourselves are integrated, Wise Mind is created. This Wise Mind is a balance of acceptance and change. It is about accepting the reality of the situation, but also changing whatever is changeable. This creates a more meaningful and authentic approach to life.

How to Develop Wise Mind

Wise Mind is developed through mindfulness practices. Mindfulness is a process where we pay attention to the present moment with an open, non-judgmental attitude. This helps us to become more aware of our thoughts and emotions and learn to accept them for what they are.

Mindful self-compassion is another key practice for developing Wise Mind. Self-compassion involves recognizing our humanness, accepting our flaws and failings, and responding to our mistakes with kindness and understanding. This can help us to gain more awareness of our emotional state and be more accepting and forgiving of our flaws.

Finally, Wise Mind can also be developed through distress tolerance, which is the ability to tolerate uncomfortable and painful emotions without engaging in unhealthy behaviour. This teaches us to accept difficult emotions without trying to avoid or suppress them.
