DBS, Home Office, and HMRC work together on innovation pipelines for One Big Thing

As you may know, One Big Thing is a government initiative that encourages all civil servants to take action on a shared change priority. This year's theme is innovation, encapsulated by the motto, "One Big Thing starts with One Small Change."

In line with this, the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) recently hosted an innovation pipeline sharing session with colleagues from the UK Home Office and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

The session, hosted by Nico Celaj , Head of Innovation at DBS, provided an excellent opportunity to discuss collaboration and innovative approaches. Participants explored how to develop common solutions moving forward and had a platform to discuss shared problems.

The session provided a platform for colleagues from DBS, Home Office, and HMRC to present their innovation pipeline areas and discuss their approaches to addressing them. It was an opportunity for the organisations to collectively share their goals for the future of innovation. Additionally, the session facilitated discussions on how the different organisations can support each other within their respective pipeline areas and share common knowledge.

The discussions included topics such as how different organisations prioritise their innovation activities, select their current areas of interest, and align these choices with their long-term strategic goals.

During the session, it was acknowledged that despite the differences between the organisations and their varying priorities, they face many similar challenges. The discussion highlighted the value of colleagues from different organisations sharing both the challenges they encounter and their ideas for potential solutions. It was agreed that moving forward, DBS, Home Office, and HMRC would collaborate and workshop ideas to address shared problems. By sharing successful solutions and learning from unsuccessful attempts, they aim to leverage this collective knowledge to make a meaningful impact within their own organisations.

A key focus of the session was the culture of change and innovation. To effectively change the culture, it is essential to understand the current state of innovation within your organisation. There was extensive discussion on how to embed a culture of change, especially now that One Big Thing has brought innovation to the forefront. Participants explored ways to capture this newfound interest in innovation and solidify it within the Civil Service.

A key outcome of the session was the agreement among DBS, Home Office, and HMRC to participate in future ideation sessions on topics such as culture. This commitment aims to foster continued collaboration between government departments.

Overall, the session was highly informative, covering a wide range of topics in the innovation space. It was encouraging to see the commitment from all attendees to continue these conversations and collaborate on shared solutions. This spirit of cooperation and innovation truly embodies the essence of One Big Thing.
