Oracle Database Cloud Service (ODCS) provides a fully-featured Oracle Database in the cloud, while allowing customers to retain full administrative control, such as root OS and SYSDBA access. The solution provides advanced cloud tooling for simpler management of the database including one-click automated backup with point-in-time recovery, one-click patching, and one-click upgrades. In addition to all the standard database-monitoring tools, ODCS includes a monitoring application that resides on a Database Cloud Service instance’s VM. This monitor provides a wide spectrum of information about VM resource usage and Oracle Database status. ODCS also supports a wide range of connectivity and access choices, including a comprehensive set of command line interfaces for typical administration tasks and network access via SSH, SQL*Net, JDBC, Web, HTTPS and other drivers. Since the architecture is the same for both cloud and on-premise, there is also support for familiar development and administrative tools, such as Oracle Application Express, SQL Developer, Data Pump, and SQL*Plus, so there DBAs don't need to learn new ones. ODCS includes a provisioning wizard to quickly and easily create new database instances, advanced cloud tooling to back up and restore database instances and related configuration and system files, utilities to automate database patching (if not fully managed by Oracle, as in the Schema Service), and a local monitoring application that provides a wide set of controls and information about the Oracle Database. In particular, the ability for DBAs to rapidly self-provision database instances, rather than waiting days, weeks, or even months for traditional infrastructure acquisition, installation, and provisioning, can significantly improve productivity. Instead, DBAs can focus on other database-related tasks, such as design, application configuration, data loading, tuning, and other operations. Depending on the subscription service (e.g., EE High Performance or EE Extreme Performance), customers can deploy additional database options and management packs to help with these other tasks, as well as overall performance, availability, and functionality.
