Days of Collection

Sorry for my delay in writing- we've been busy here!

After my return from Flint, I settled in to a LOT of study and community time here in Adrian. Currently, I'm engaged in an Intro to Old Testament course at Catholic Theological Union, learning more about the history and spirituality of our Dominican Family, and spending time visiting our sisters.

Two weeks ago, we kicked off the 'Share the Love' drive here on campus to benefit our neighbors at Holy Family Parish in Adrian. As I ministered at their food pantry downtown, I noticed how quickly we'd run out of food items and kept hearing that January and February would be lean months because contributors can develop 'donation fatigue' (I had never heard such a thing before, but I can understand it!).

It occurred to me we have so many Sisters, Associates, and CoWorkers who are willing and able to be of service, so I pitched the idea to Sr. Pat and our ADS Gives committee. ADS Gives is a program of philanthropy, community building and support to build a more resilient Lenawee County. With their help, we got the word out around campus, developed a delivery system, and hosted a informational meeting.

Robyn, Office Support Co-Worker, is a great driver-all smiles!

Weekly, a co-worker or sister and I would pick up all the donations around campus and connect with a parishioner at Holy Family to make deliveries. The response has met the needs beautifully! We have donated boxes full of non-perishables, toiletries and other needs that will be used immediately by our neighbors.

Sr. Judith helps me with a collection run.

I am exhausted each time I roll that cart through the Madden tunnel, but I can only smile to think about how my community has come together to respond. I am also deeply touched by the support and encouragement I've been given as a candidate to facilitate such an event.

The drive ends tomorrow, but the feeling of pride in my community and accomplishment will last for a long while. As we approach the liturgical season of Lent, I also find myself thinking about this as perfect example of what the 40 days of preparation are about:

  • Living and working as community
  • Seeing needs and responding
  • Allowing ourselves the freedom to serve and give what we can
  • Treating all with dignity

Hoping all of you have a wonderful Lenten observance and develop a practice of prayer and action that works for you. Wish me luck, I'm back to studying!

Peace,

Jamie
