Daycation Participant Spotlight

Ron, a participant at Daycation, grew up in Springfield, Illinois and moved to California as a senior in high school. Ron attended the University of California, Davis where he got his PhD in Chemistry. He met his wife Jeannie when he was a senior and she was a freshman. They have been married for 53 years.

Ron was a professor at the University for over 30 years where he focused on research and development. Due to his health he had to retire four years ago. Ron was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and Lewy Body Dementia (LBD). Ron’s progression has been slow, and his cognitive development is still good, but his executive functioning does not allow him to take care of himself. Ron has a caretaker and attends Daycation for Seniors on a regular basis.

Jeannie, his wife, is grateful for Daycation. She explained that Ron enjoys his time at Daycation for Seniors. In the beginning it was difficult for him, but once he adjusted, he realized he could identify with people there and not feel judged and just have fun. Jeannie explained that it is a great social outlet for Ron, which is crucial to his health and well-being. She is grateful that he still has mobility and a great quality of life. For her this is the most important thing when you are facing a neurovegetative disease that has no cure. Jeannie stated that as long as they are able Ron will continue to come to Daycation. “Some days he just can't get out of bed, so we really appreciate the membership program where we can bring him any day and time we choose. Sometimes Ron has one of those not so good days and we look forward to a time when it's better. “This is quite a roller coaster, and we deal with it one day at a time.”
