The Day Weekly Newsletter | 19 July

What can we learn from the first assassination attempt on a US presidential candidate in the age of social media?

Above all, this: the breath-taking speed of the conspiracists. Within an hour there were thousands on X and other platforms.?

As educators, we can try to control smartphones and news intake and regulate social media. But nothing will work as well as a critical mind.

To develop the habit, thinking for yourself is the first step. For this we need daily practice in questioning, sceptical reading, fact-checking and spotting misinformation.

The second step is speaking up. Every time we say what we think, we set an example. We inspire others to disagree, to debate, to listen.?

And this is what has been the guiding light at The Day every single day. If every young person could find their own voice, the lies wouldn't stand a chance.

Debate this

With ten days to go before the Olympic Games open in Paris, chefs are preparing to cook 500 different dishes for the many athletes taking part. The operation is a huge one. The dining hall in the Olympic Village is 220m long and 24m wide and can seat 3,500 people.

The challenge is not just to satisfy the competitors’ hunger but to cater to the athletes' diverse nutritional needs. Chef Jeff Leidy?says that bananas are athletes’ favourite food: “We anticipate getting two or three million bananas.”

Is food the key to world peace?

65% said yes: Coming together to eat is something that all cultures have in common, and discovering the food of other nations is the most enjoyable and effective way of opening our eyes to them.

35% thought no: However well ordinary people connect over food, world peace depends on politicians who are driven by their own ambitions. The best meal in the world will not persuade Putin to withdraw from Ukraine.
