4/1/1936 The Social Security Board moved into its own headquarters on 1712 G Street, Washington, D.C. (The Board had been in the Department of Labor building, but was later moved to this 1712 G Street which was the old Department of Labor building.) The Board offices were located on the 7th floor.?

?4/1/1937 The Social Security Board abandoned the District Office/Branch Office plan of organization and designated all sub-regional offices as field offices.?

?4/1/1944 Pensions were authorized for all physically or mentally helpless children of deceased veterans regardless of the age of the child at the date the claim was filed or at the time of the veteran's death, provided the child was disabled at age 16 and the disability continued to the date of the claim.?

?4/1/1946 The Kansas City Area Office, part of which was split off from New Orleans, opened.?

?4/1/1952 The Social Security Administration's Annual Report (1951) recommended health insurance for beneficiaries.??

4/1/1969 In coordination with HEW's own task force, SSA established a Task Force on Manpower Utilization, which was headed up by Jack S. Futterman.?

?4/1/1970 Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare Finch announced the formation of a Family Assistance Planning Staff at the Department level. The SSA elements dealing with FAP (established in February) were incorporated into the Department staff.??

4/1/1971 In a landmark decision, Richardson versus Perales, the Supreme Court upheld by a vote of 6-3, the Federal Government's and Social Security Administration's position on requirements of procedural due process. In this, the first SSA case heard by the Supreme Court, the majority held that a written report of a consultative physician, albeit hearsay in character, could constitute substantive evidence to support a decision adverse to an applicant for disability benefits.?

The awards, to 34 community groups in 16 states and the District of Columbia, are part of the Homeless Outreach Programs & Education Projects and Evaluation (HOPE) initiative.??
