Day of Service: Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today's Legacy Magazine edition honors Martin Luther King, Jr. and his tremendous teaching and legacy.

At Legacy Leaders Institute, we celebrate his birthday and his tremendous work during January.

We also contribute actively with our efforts in the community with a Day of Service focused on education, primarily through legacy leaders' principles.

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s perspective and wisdom on a wide range of topics, including ministry, civil rights and educa,tion are timeless and relevant more than ever today.

The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. But education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society. The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason, but with no morals.

As we take a moment to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. this year, we must reflect on his tremendous contribution and sacrifice. The short biography provides a much-needed reminder of why MLK Day is an important national holiday.

President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating a U.S. federal holiday in honor of King in 1983. This was accomplished after years of campaigning by many, including activists, members of Cong,ress and Coretta Scott King, the American author, activist, civil rights leader, and wife of Dr. King.

Since then, it has been observed on the third Monday of January, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It was first celebrated in 1986.

Today, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day has become the most recognized day on the calendar for community service.

I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits. ~ MLK

Dr. King often spoke of service, community, empowerment and nonviolence, an opportunity to be intentional and active on this day by spreading the word of service, community support, people empowerment and nonviolent conflict resolution. We have more than ever opportunities to put his teachings and wisdom to work.

We must come to see that the end we seek is a society at peace with itself, a society that can live with its conscience. ~MLK
