A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

FUNDRAISER FOR CANCER LEAGUE OF COLORADO

I am raising funding for the Cancer League of Colorado. Information on this charity fundraising campaign is presented in the Instant Funding editions on August 30th and 31st and September 1st and 2nd.

On September 20th or 21st, I will rappel 200 feet from the bridge at McGregor Square in Denver, Colorado, to call attention to the great work of the Cancer League of Colorado and my fundraising campaign.

Fifteen days and counting till September 20th. My goal is $6,000. With my donation and others, I am currently at $1,150 two days into my fundraising campaign.

You may donate directly to my Over the Edge campaign through the Cancer League of Colorado at https://www.denverovertheedge.com/teams/dakin-capital/

You may also donate through the GoFundMe platform at https://gofund.me/028df78d.

Everyone who donates a minimum of $50 will receive a subscription to Dakin’s Edge: Charity Fundraising Kit. This online set of tools provides information, plans, and promotional materials to help an individual conduct a fundraising campaign to support their favorite charity.

FUNDING HAPPENINGS?

?Sustainability may mean never raising funding again.

A call regarding the parameters of a single fundraising campaign shifted focus to consider all of the future campaigns that may follow the first one. Everyone hopes that they are one and done with their first campaign, attaining profitability on a scale that they will never need to raise money again. If they are not this fortunate, then a small business may anticipate a series of campaigns, with each paving the way for the next. This requires a long-term capital strategy.

There is funding for energy conservation and generation.

Yesterday, I was in the audience for a webinar on PACE (property-assessed clean energy) financing. This special assessment financing is available in most states and areas. In exchange for reducing a building's energy consumption, excelling minimum energy conservation efforts, or installing wind or solar energy, a portion of the cost may be shifted into a long-term lien to the local government that is paid off out of property taxes. This makes some money available at below-market rates with the possibility of a longer payback, creating more flexibility within the capital stack. FUNDING POINT – A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

?On 9/11, I was scheduled to engage in a series of pitches for a new technology. At my first meeting of the day, this first tower crash was announced. Strange. Far away. I went on to my next meeting. We were interrupted and directed to a television broadcast regarding the second tower during the pitch. I immediately knew, without any other information, that someone had coordinated an attack. The target was unknown. The reason was unknown. Just a terrible feeling. As I drove home, I passed Centennial Airport – a fairly active commercial airport – with all planes grounded. I arrived home and looked for additional information. All bad. My window looks out over Centennial Airport in the distance. No planes. This type of quiet was eerie.

I was scheduled to be in New York City the following week for the Audio Engineering Show to be held at the Javits Convention Center. The Show was delayed and then cancelled as the Center become the morgue.

On the day of the event, I was not aware of anyone who was in the buildings. Within the week, I knew of two people that were. They both escaped.

I reviewed the offering documents we were using that had already raised a large sum of money. In the Statement of Risks there was no reference to the possibility of a terrorist attack.

I reviewed our insurance policies. There was no coverage for a terrorist attack.

The project I was pitching was on the verge of breaking out with a demonstration converting to a major contract. It never happened. The customer was so badly impacted by 9/11 that they canceled the contract. The project was already way late, over budget, and highly leveraged. Despite two more years of trying to keep it going, the project was terminated with large losses. None of the investors held us responsible. They took their losses.

Four years of my life were wiped out. However, I was far more fortunate than so many people.

As an entrepreneur, you are expected to experience failure. This one was bad.

SUCCESSFUL FUNDING

YESTERDAY, Kon Apostolopoulos s with Fresh Biz Solutions was my guest on Successful Funding. Kon is an expert in leadership?and has a newly published book on the topic. DON COHEN SHOW

THIS MORNING, I discussed 'cash flow' with Don Cohen on his show. This simple topic ended up going off in multiple directions as reality demonstrated that very little happens today without credit. Knowing as many types and sources of credit, from vendors to customers, extends the range of small business operations.

LAST MONDAY, I was a guest again on Don Cohen’s show on LinkedIn Live. The topic of our conversation was ‘business strategy.’ We discuss where strategy fits into the evolution of a business to mark the path (runway lights) toward the goals of the business. Our conversation included a critical path, deviations from the path, and the failure to set long-term goals.
