A Day For Pause & Reflection
My son is in the United States Air Force. My father served, but not by choice. He survived. My son has been overseas and for those long months, a day never went by that I held him in my heart till the day he returned.
I never really understood the full meaning of Memorial Day until I did some research on my own a few years back. I wanted to fully understand why people vacationed, celebrated, and shopped.
This is a day of pause and reflection on those who sacrificed their lives for us. This is a day we should be speaking with our children, educating them on the importance of this day, and why it is even a day of importance.
Eleanor Roosevelt said it best, “Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes responsibility.”
So, if you can remember, this is not a happy day, but a day for memory.
As Elie Wiesel once said, “Without memory, there is no culture. Without memory there would be no civilization, no future.” Let us remember our military families, our service men and women, our veterans, and those who so courageously and selflessly gave their lives so that we can have a future.
“Memorial Day isn’t just about honoring veterans, it’s honoring those who lost their lives. Veterans had the fortune of coming home. For us, that’s a reminder of when we come home we still have a responsibility to serve. It’s a continuation of service that honors our country and those who fell defending it.”—Pete Hegseth
May we all reflect on the loved ones who gave so we can have.
