Day one at the Gartner Symposium

A great first day at the Gartner Symposium. Far too much to consume all in a day, but thankfully many of the sessions will be available for replay later!

I did however take 7 key things away for the day which resonated most with me and my role at Delt.

In my opinion, some of these are common sense approaches that many of us are already focused on. However, the golden thread around sustainability was clear throughout the day, which was great to see and hear. I loved the idea of "developing an energy diet", something I'll be talking to my family, and colleagues, about at home! The other intriguing topic was the role of Shared Services, and with being proud to work for Delt [a Shared Services organisation] this really hit home. It was great to see Gartner re-enforce the benefits of Shared Services as one enabler for improving the business value from IT.

Here’s a look at my top 7 takeaways;

  1. ?The biggest focuses are the economic challenges, talent crisis, sustainability, and Cybersecurity.
  2. Cybersecurity should be embedded as a business issue, not merely a technical one, and ensure organisations balance investment with risk appetite.
  3. Always align technology and trends to the business objectives. Never be tempted to invest in technology on the basis that you think it is the answer.
  4. Invest in digital and review sustainability efforts in other areas of the business. Allow technology to aid an ‘energy diet’ in striving for carbon net zero.
  5. Shift from “paying the job” to “paying the person” by implementing skill-based pay to attract quality candidates.
  6. Consider adopting Shared Services if you want to improve the business value obtained from IT. This will allow organisations to shift to a value-based operating model.
  7. Responsibly invest in technologies that provide a ‘two for one’ return on financial and environmental sustainability.

Stay tuned for day 2 which will focus on Leadership, Strategy, Public Sector and Cybersecurity.?
