A day in Nouvelle-Aquitaine with the NBRACER project: The environment and nature have more imagination than we do.

So began a journey with the welcome by Professor Alain Dupuy, former expert in Hydrogeology of AcclimaTerra , organised by the Région Nouvelle-Aquitaine in the Université de Bordeaux with the participation of some thirty experts and representatives of the region.

Nouvelle-Aquitaine is one of the five Atlantic regions that the European Union has selected to explore how to apply nature-based solutions within the strategies for adaptation to climate change, from an integrated approach where the stakeholders engagement plays a key role. This region has an ambitious strategy for 2030, NEO-TERRA, which addresses energy, economic, industrial, agricultural and ecological transition as the basis for regional action.?

In the current phase this strategy aims to work on a portfolio of solutions in the different sectors. This is where NBRACER project plays a strategic role, starting with this week's workshop sharing examples of solutions that are already being implemented in rivers, wetlands and aquifers, or even the re-naturalization of municipalities with the initiative of a million trees.

The different projects showed a deep knowledge of the reality and possible solutions, but where the citizens of this territory have to accept the actions to be undertaken, understanding the strong connection of the economic activity of our society with the natural system, and where both have to reach a balance. Examples explained how farmers and conservationists start from very different approaches on how to modify landscapes, and the need of pedagogy to explain the impact of nature based solutions, which are not as quick as gray solutions, and where risk thresholds should be understood, with the objective of becoming a more resilient territory.

Climate KIC will accompany Nouvelle-Aquitaine in its Regional journeys to resilience during the next three years, connecting the regional baseline with the shared targets agreed among regional stakeholders.
