Empowering transitions. Navigate with purpose. We guide the way.
Father's Day is a time of year that evokes many emotions. For many, it's a joyous occasion to celebrate the incredible dads in our lives, the ones who offer unwavering support, endless dad jokes (sometimes!), and a guiding hand through thick and thin.
But for others, Father's Day can be a day tinged with sadness. It can be a time of missing a father who is no longer with us or navigating a complex relationship with a father figure.
This article acknowledges all the emotions that come with Father's Day.
Celebrating the Dads Who Make a Difference
Dads come in all shapes and sizes, but they all share a common thread: their love and dedication to their children. Whether it's the dad who offers sage advice, the one who throws the best backyard barbecues, or the single father who juggles work and childcare with superhero-like strength, dads deserve our appreciation.
Watching young dads with multiple children is interesting. I recently watched a dad in church with his two sons.? He might not know what the preacher said, but he engaged with his children, teaching them how to be in church.? Doesn’t that bring a smile to your face?
Remembering Dads, We Miss
For those who have lost a father, Father's Day can be particularly challenging. The absence of a loved one can be deeply felt.
Where do you find yourself closest to your dad?? My place is on the family farm, or a walk through the graveyard where my mom and dad’s bodies were laid to rest.? Quiet, calm places to allow my mind to wander remembering my dad.
Finding Peace with the Past
For some, Father's Day can bring up unresolved issues from their childhood. If you have a difficult relationship with your father, it's important to acknowledge your feelings.
We must remember that not everyone had a great childhood.? There can be difficult relationships and memories that cloud days of celebration.? We must be present for everyone, and that includes the person who still needs self-care and understanding to work through trauma in their lives.
Making Father's Day Your Own
Father's Day can be meaningful no matter your relationship with your father. It's a chance to celebrate fatherhood, reflect on the men who have shaped our lives, and focus on the positive aspects of our journeys.
Remembering the positive things in our past, making new memories today, and looking forward to the future is the beginning of our healing process.? What experiences do you hold softly when you think of your dad?
