A day in the Life of Web3

A day in the Life of Web3

Good morning and welcome to issue 14 of Impact with Web3. Just over 3 months into this side project and the response has been amazing.

This has led to new opportunities to deepen my education in web3 and to formalise my space here in Web3. These new opportunities and projects mean that I will be changing my content delivery so that I can provide more of the content that I am being asked about.

Businesses and individuals are telling me that they want more in-depth practical how-to guides and breakdowns on how to integrate tech into their business. This type of content takes longer to research, test and create. To that end, I will be moving my email to a longer format and releasing once per month, the next issue on the 5th of November.

To those that are joining me on this journey down the rabbit hole of web3 I will be aiming to increase my social media content to share more bite-sized content covering marketing strategy, business strategy, news and project updates all through the lens of Web3.

A day in 2023 Web3 Life

In this week's email I wanted to take a journey into the very near future... as in this is all possible now. I want to introduce you to Jeff and his interactions with Web3 during the course of their day.

Jeff, like most people, interacts with web3 on a daily basis with work and in his personal life.

Jeff works remotely for his company and will often find himself working from a local cafe. His favourite cafe, Crypto Coffee (CC), sold an NFT founder's pass when they first set up 2 years ago. The NFT gives certain benefits and generates 5 $CC tokens per month.

One of the key benefits of the NFT is the access it gives to the CC community. Being part of the community gives Jeff the chance to influence the direction of the company. An example of this is every month CC released a new coffee from one of its roasters or suppliers abroad. By staking his NFT, Jeff can vote on which coffee is chosen, the name and the art on the coffee bag.

One way the CC has continued to provide utility and benefits to its founder's pass holders has been in rewards. When someone in their community who holds a pass shares a post they get rewarded with CC tokens. These tokens can be used to buy from CC any of their items or they can be sold on the open market for £.

Over the last 2 years, Jeff has seen CC grow into a small chain. As he has been a founders pass holder and regular contributor he has accumulated 1,000 $CC tokens. With the growth of the company, the value of the token has also increased. Jeff decides that now is a time to cash in some of his goodwill, the tokens net him a decent sum which he puts toward a family trip.

At the end of the day, Jeff settles down on Sunday to watch the latest episode of the Lunatics, a series from the artist of the Simpsons. Jeff is a holder of an NFT depicting one of the characters from the series that he bought as a way for the creators to raise money for the series. This NFT is accessible in the Lunatics community, where Jeff has been able to influence the story of his character. (Editors note, this is actually an NFT I own from the artists behind the Simpsons, check them out here)

How could your business start to incorporate web3?

The consumer's desire to exert influence on brands and world events is a trend that has been built since the start of the web. Web2 increased this ability with the advent of social media giving consumers a voice. The largest influencer however remains where we spend our money, so what we say is less important than what we do.

Web3 takes the idea of consumers influencing brands, belonging to a community and giving all a financial stake a step closer. Web3 blurs the lines between consumer, investor, business, ambassador and early adopter.

As consumers start to have a more participatory role, brands will have to change their mindset. They will need to adopt the idea of mutual ownership and collaboration. Rather than the traditional model of market research, developing an MVP and then launching. We will instead see communities and brands forming around the idea of the big problem and co-creating the MVP (see my article Can You Ask Your Customers to Build Your MVP)

I loved the way you described Jeff. How NFTs are part of his daily life makes it sound so typical. Hopefully, we will get there soon. Great piece Steen. Thank you for it.

Another insightful article Steen Stones as it starts to show the real-life benefits of what Web 3 will/could be. I think the collaborative and community aspects will be key to the success of companies moving forward. This is a very exciting time.
