A Day in the Life of a Technical Analyst
Matthew Whitfield joined ANS almost four years ago, starting on the Applications 3rd line team. From there he moved up into Technical Operations and has recently settled into a hybrid role combining Professional Services, SME for Back up as a Service and Fully Managed backups.
I caught up with Matt to find out how he has found the evolution of his career over the last four years at ANS.
Matt, I think it’s fair to say you’ve moved around the business quite frequently! Can you provide a bit more insight into the teams and the different roles you’ve had in each of them?
Sure, I started on the Apps 3rd line team within Managed Services, providing support for Microsoft operating systems and applications that ANS deploy, such as Microsoft server, SQL, Exchange and SharePoint. I was heavily involved in the ‘Backup as a Service (BaaS) from the deployment phase and provided support to our customers on this platform.
From there I moved up into the Technical Operations team as a service owner for the BaaS platform, maintaining and upgrading the platform as well as working on internal projects and also as an escalation point for the Applications team.
It’s been a great journey from that first week in Applications to designing backup solutions for some of our larger customers and deploying them. The experience of working on each team and learning the role, along with the help I’ve received from many colleagues along the way has made the journey an enjoyable one. I’ve met and worked with some great people at ANS and learnt more skills in the 4 years I’ve been here than the previous 10 years in my last job!
What does your current role entail?
At the moment I’m looking after the Back Up as a Service environment which means making myself available as an escalation resource for the 3rd line Backup Team. I’m also available as a Professional Services resource for backup solutions. Currently, I’m working on building a fully managed, multisite backup solution for one of our customers with another ready to start in the next few weeks.
You’re quite busy then! Did you find your Day in the Life experience useful?
Yeah, it was great. It was good to talk through my new role in detail and to show you what I’m working on at the moment. It gave me the opportunity to ask you questions on a personal level about your beliefs and where you see the business going over the next few years. It’s refreshing to know that everyone has a voice at ANS and board members are always happy to listen to your views and opinions. It’s not often you see that level of transparency in the workplace.
It’s honestly so pleasing to hear that. That is the reason I wanted to kick start the Day in the Life campaign – I wanted to reassure everyone in the business that I’m approachable, here to listen and here to help should anyone need me.
Just to round off, what advice would you give to someone thinking about joining ANS?
Go for it! With the right attitude and plenty of determination you will achieve great things here and will be supported every step of the way.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Matt.

8 年Great idea Paul. As my 3rd ever client 9 years ago I have personally witnessed people's careers at ANS sky rocket. Most of the People I trained way back then are now in Senior positions. Joining ANS is a no brainer. Fantastic place to work either as an employee or as a supplier. ANS is a vibrant meritocracy that favours people with drive and determination. Martin
