Within the WES London Cluster, we wanted to share with you the vast range of roles that are represented by the Cluster. In this series we will be posting a ‘day in the life’ article to show what each of our members do in a typical day! Today we are featuring Eleanor Bean, from Atkins. We hope you enjoy!

I’m responsible for…

Designing, managing and integrating complex aerospace or defence systems over their lifecycle. Systems Engineers use holistic and creative thinking to visualise complex ideas and communicate these to clients and stakeholders.

The best thing about my job is…

The people around me. We operate with a flat hierarchy structure which means I work alongside really experienced and knowledgeable people and get the opportunity to learn lots of valuable information from them.

My Favourite Work Memory is…

Speaking on behalf of Atkins for a Gradcracker virtual Q&A event with nearly 200 people in attendance.

An Average Day

9am

I start off the day with a call with my team every morning to discuss any blockers, actions for that day and just generally check in with each other.

11am

I’m most productive in the morning so try to save this time for any more technical work, as a Systems Engineer this could be anything from writing requirements, creating architecture views, writing reports, preparing content for workshops and much more.

1pm

I generally try to schedule my meetings for the early afternoon to break up the day, these could be project based, with my line manager for a catch-up or for any internal initiatives I am involved in (for example I am our Young Professional Forums volunteering coordinator).

3pm

After my lunch break and some meetings I carry on with the project work I am currently assigned to.

5pm

Finish the work day.

Is this to be added to The Woman Engineer journal?
