A day in the life of a Senior Service Technician
Sunbelt Rentals UK & Ireland
Rental and sales solutions for Construction, Film & TV, Events, Facilities Management, Infrastructure and more!
We sat down with Steve Lister, Senior Service Technician for Survey to discuss his journey at Sunbelt Rentals, the training he has received and what he enjoys about his role.
How have you found the business since joining?
"Sunbelt Rentals is unlike anywhere I’ve ever worked before, and I made the right decision in joining the company 2.5 years ago.
The training is second-to-none, the support is boundless, the people are great, and all the managers are approachable.
I started at Sunbelt Rentals the week before the country went into lockdown. Luckily, I was able to hit the ground running and keep on top of customer requirements thanks to the experience I had built up in previous roles."
What do you enjoy about your role as a Senior Service Technician
"We work on a wide variety of top end survey equipment, ranging from Robotic total stations to GPS equipment. These items are incredibly important in many different sectors and customers, not least planning new buildings and roadworks, or studying existing buildings and bridges to check for any signs of movement. As such, it’s vital that the equipment is properly serviced, maintained and calibrated for absolute accuracy.
I get a lot of job satisfaction from my role.
It’s incredibly rewarding to carry out a 14.5 hour ‘Extended Maintenance’ on a robotic instrument that’s been returned and see the clear difference between the ‘incoming inspection’ and the ‘outgoing inspection’ tests. Extended maintenance on a TS16 Robotic total station involves a full strip down and rebuild, cleaning and re-greasing along the way, as well as setting adjustments mechanically and defining them on our service software."
Tell us about your experience of managing a team at Sunbelt Rentals
"I’m lucky to be part of a great team. I manage three people and really enjoy passing on the skills I’ve built up over the years. I think the best thing about my job is helping train and support other technicians to gain more knowledge and experience in the industry. Every member of the team is very thorough, exacting and pays great attention to detail."
