A day in the life of a Scientist IV, Analytical Services

Zoe joined Oxford Biomedica three and a half years ago, and works within our Analytical Services Group. In this article Zoe explains her current role, describes her career journey and what its like to work at Oxford Biomedica.

What is your current role and what are you responsible for?

I am currently a Scientist IV in the Analytical Services Group (ASG) at OXB. Our main focus is to perform QC analysis on QC and GMP release products, and to assist the Analytical Development Group in performing study assays for new products. I work in the Containment Level 3 (CL3) group, where I perform lab work, including tissue culture, reagent preparation, and qPCR, and train new operators in our Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

?Tell us about your career journey at Oxford Biomedica.

I began working at OXB as a Scientist II, three and a half years ago, and have progressed to a Scientist IV. OXB has given me the opportunity to gain lab techniques that I did not have previously and develop my skills in technical writing.

?What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is the variety, every day is different. There is a good mix of lab work and office-based tasks, which keeps you busy. Also knowing I am part of a company which provides leading gene and cell therapy and is contributing to saving lives is fulfilling.

How would you describe the culture at Oxford Biomedica??

There is a good work life balance and an opportunity to develop positive working relationships within OXB.

What values do you see demonstrated within your team?

The core values of OXB, Integrity, Innovation and Inspiration, are seen within my team. My team displays effective teamwork to ensure the work is completed to a high standard and we support each other on busy lab days.

What is the best career advice you have ever given/received?

You don’t have to be perfect, that is why pencils have erasers.

What would be the most surprising scientific discovery imaginable?

A way to reverse climate change is definitely needed! Save the polar bears!?
