Project managers play a crucial role in our company. They oversee the development and implementation of technology solutions, ensuring that projects are completed on time, within budget, and meet the agreed-upon specifications. They coordinate the work of team members, manage project resources, and communicate effectively with stakeholders. Additionally, they are responsible for ensuring that the tech solutions we deliver meet our high standards for quality. Overall, project managers are essential to our company's success and help us stay competitive in the market.

A Day in the Life of an IT Project Manager

Andrey explained that his day starts with a cup of coffee or tea and a quick check of his inbox. He replies to urgent emails and prioritizes his tasks using Microsoft Outlook.

"I always start my day by checking my inbox and responding to any urgent emails. I prioritize my tasks using Microsoft Outlook. Then I have a call with my project team to get updates and review any action items that may require adjustments to the project plan," says Andrey.

Throughout the day, Andrey manages his usual tasks such as one-on-one meetings, mentoring, and interviewing new candidates. He also takes a break for lunch, which he blocks out in his calendar to ensure he has time to recharge.

"As a project manager, I wear many hats. I have one-on-one meetings with team members to check their progress and mentor them. I also interview new candidates to guarantee we have the right people on our team".

In the evenings, Andrey has meetings scheduled with clients.

"I work with clients in different time zones, so my evenings are often filled with project events such as daily stand-ups, scrum of scrums, planning, retrospectives, refinement, and one-on-one meetings with stakeholders," he explains.

"I use a variety of tools to communicate and collaborate with my team members, stakeholders, and clients. By utilizing a variety of tools, I can keep my team and stakeholders informed and engaged, which helps to ensure the success of the project.”

The Challenges of Project Management

With new technologies emerging every day, project managers need to stay up to date with the latest trends and secure that their team members have the necessary skills to work with the latest technologies.

As Andrey explains, "To stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and trends, I attend specific training and get certifications based on my overall professional growth strategy and the skills I believe I need to improve. Currently, I'm focused on learning more about the SAFe framework and how it can be used in the project. I also attend different online events and read articles related to new trends and topics I'm interested in. Additionally, I communicate with other professionals from the communities I'm part of."

By staying informed and connected to the larger IT community, project managers like Andrey can incorporate the latest technologies and trends into their projects, which can contribute to the success of their projects.

"There are a lot of challenges I face as an IT Project Manager. Usually, they are unique for every project (as every project is unique as well). I do believe the biggest challenges are always related to communication because our company is spread across the world, and we need to work with people from different countries and different cultures."

Another challenge is the need to balance competing priorities. The project manager must guarantee that the project is completed on time, within budget, and meets the client's expectations. However, they also need to ensure that team members are not overworked and that the project's quality is not compromised.
