A Day in the Life of a Nursing Home Med Tech

When entering a nursing home, you will see all sorts of people. Typically, people recognize what nurses and staff members look like; however, most are not familiar with med techs or the important, vital work they do. So, let’s take a closer look at the world of med techs.

How to Earn Your Med Tech Certification

Basic Qualifications

To become a med tech, there are certain basic qualifications to meet. For example, you must be at least 18 years old and have your high school diploma or G.E.D. You must also be completely fluent in English.

Training and Certification

Afterward, it’s necessary to complete training and certification programs. Depending on your state of residence, you may need to become a certified nursing assistant. This usually requires between 6-12 weeks of classes and training.

It is important to note that Temple University is the exclusive provider of all online med tech training in PA. In addition, there are no longer manual paper credentials for PA med techs. Meaning, these classes are no longer held in person. As a result, there is significantly less chance of fraud. So, individuals can learn their skills without having to travel. This makes receiving training incredibly accessible for those in PA.

Finally, you must pass your state board exam. After passing, you will be licensed to work as a certified med tech. It’s important to note that you need to regularly renew your license, typically every two years.

What You Should Expect From Med Tech Jobs

Now that you have completed your coursework and passed your state’s licensing exam, it is time to talk about the job. Certified med techs (CMTs) complete a plethora of tasks throughout the day.

Tasks and Responsibilities

CMTs focus on medication. It is their responsibility to prepare and properly dispose of medication. In addition, they must take thorough patient notes and verify and organize patient records, ultimately greatly helping doctors and nurses.

They also confirm medication dosage and timing while assisting with medication changes and deliveries. Of course, though, this will be at the discretion of senior healthcare workers.

Qualities and Characteristics

Certified med techs must possess different skills and qualities. For example, they must be detail-oriented. This is because medication is especially crucial, so being precise with their note-taking is a must.

In addition, CMTs should have strong communication skills, as they regularly report to doctors and nurses. With effective communication, tasks can be completed with better efficiency.
