A Day in the Life: Meet Lui, Legal Adviser for Employee Relations at Olympus

‘A Day in the Life’ is a series where we are shining the spotlight on our people and their varied roles, responsibilities and experiences at Olympus.

Lui has been with Olympus since 2022, starting as an HR Business Partner (HRBP) & Employee Relations Case Manager. He’s currently transitioning into a specialised role within the Legal team.

Employee Relations is an area that’s often misunderstood, but it’s about positive relationships in the workplace and ensuring the right support is in place for all employees, regardless of their role, so any issues can be resolved as quickly as possible.

Lui explains, ‘I began my journey at Olympus in a split role, as a HRBP and Employee Relations Case Manager. The latter part of this actually evolved into my new role, which is focused now exclusively on employee relations.

My aim is to provide unwavering support to both employees and managers during any performance and capability, disciplinary, grievance or other formal processes that may come up that involve any employment law aspect or perspective. I guide managers through these processes, ensuring we adhere to best practices and legal requirements, and maintain fairness and consistency in our implementation and interpretation of the respective policy.'

Lui also plays a crucial role in policy and process improvements. ‘It’s not just about Olympus’ internal policies, it’s about staying competitive in the market and providing our employees with the best experience possible,’ he explains. His goal is to make Olympus a more attractive employer by having a strong Employee Relations offering that supports managers, increases retention and enhances the overall employee experience. ?

Lui’s workday can vary in length depending on the tasks at hand but throughout his day, he strives to create a dynamic, approachable environment. ‘I’m here to help, support and advise, rather than just telling people what they can and cannot do’ he says.

Outside of work, Lui enjoys his sports and often plays golf in his free time, if the weather permits. He is also a huge football fan, and is hoping Italy will lift the trophy again in this year's European Championships.
