Joanne Gregory, Technical Consultant, Mercia Group
This week we have been talking to the technical consultants that work in our Mercia Group business for our ‘Day in the Life Of..’ interview series.
Today, we are delighted to speak to Joanne Gregory who has been a Technical Consultant since February 2020 to find out more about the role of a Technical Consultant and what it involves.
?Hi Joanne, so first-up, do please tell us what a typical day looks like for you?
“I work mostly from home, but I’m part of the close, manuals team. A typical day includes working on manual updates or improvements, answering manuals queries from subscribers, keeping on top of developments within audit and assurance, as well as the specialist areas we cover in our manuals, and frequent meetings with my colleagues over Teams both pre-planned and ad hoc. Work isn’t routine and so there is never a dull day!”
What is an essential ingredient to making your workday feel rewarding or accomplished?
“I really enjoy the mix of collaboration and quiet time. As an author, you do need a quiet working space, but I certainly don’t feel detached from my colleagues. Mercia has done a great job in providing ways to keep us all in touch and make us feel a valued part of the team.”
What excites you most about your work?
“I love developing something new or improved that receives good feedback. Ideas are always welcomed at Mercia and we often share ideas which eventually lead to improvements in our products. The end result is wonderful to see.”
Are certain qualifications necessary for your role?
“As well as being a qualified accountant, you do need a particular interest in accounting and auditing standards, legislation and the various regulations. I would also say that you do need to be able to interpret these into something that is easily understood and easy to follow by a busy accountant in practice. A passion for the profession is a must!”
Have you learned anything since starting your role at Wilmington/Mercia Group?
“Lots! I thought I was a technically savvy accountant pre-Mercia but I’ve been taught so much by my colleagues. As well as technical knowledge, I’ve developed presentation skills, communication, skills in developing digital training, etc. I find I learn something new and often unexpected each week.”
For anyone considering applying for a role at Mercia Group, what would you like them to know?
“Mercia is a wonderful place to work. We have a great leadership team who value their members of staff. My colleagues made me feel very welcome when I first joined and this has continued over the years – I really look forward to meeting up with everyone at various event during the year. I also find Wilmington as a group to be very forward thinking in their approach to technology and HR.”
