A day in the life of a HR Consultant

Ever wondered what a HR Consultant does?
Well no two days are the same to be honest but it does tend to be a little like this.........
The day usually starts with dropping the Boy off at College in Ashburton then straight to the office unless I have an appointment.
Today I headed straight to a new client in Exeter to meet the Board Members as they are looking for HR Support. The meeting went well and another new client all signed up to our services.
On the way back I visit my client who needs me to attend a Disciplinary Hearing. First 30 minutes is spent briefing my client on the process and then the meeting starts. Client's happy as the meeting went far better then he had expected and he was grateful for me being there.
Now that’s over it’s back to the office. Firstly I need a coffee as disciplinarys are never enjoyable but thankfully this one didn’t result in a dismissal.
PC booted up and now time to check my emails.........then the phone goes, this is the standard day for a HR Consultant, emails and for the majority of the day advising clients and taking new business calls.
One client today has an issue with a member of staff who isn’t turning up for work every day. Seems they don’t like to communicate with the boss either ??another common issue for businesses. The next call is a client asking what they should do as an Employee has not issued them with a Drs Fit Note and has been off sick for 2 weeks!
Coffees gone cold Aghhh! (standard thing) no back to the PC as emails to respond to after grabbing my favourite Prawn Sandwich from ASDA.
2.00pm and my client arrives at the office as we have an interview to do at 3pm. Time to prep and advise the Client on the format of the interview. Interview done and all went well. One more to do later this week.
Next is a call from my client who needs help working out an Employee's part time holiday allowance. This is another common query... Client said "trying to work it out it made her head hurt" so I explained and now she's happy.
Phone goes again and a client needs advice on a member of staff who is not doing their job well and needs to know what to do. After a long conversation an informal Performance Review meeting is arranged. That’s one to follow up again in a few weeks.
Now its time for a bit of social media; creating posts for LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, something I enjoy doing afer a busy HR day.
Ping .....another email comes in... Client needs 6 new starter contracts so let's do that and then I am going home.
Tomorrow will be another similar day. #thejoysofhr
