A Day in the Life of EHS on Hinkley Point C

What is a typical day like for our Health & Safety team on Hinkley Point C? While every day is different on site, here's one example:

  • 7.00am - Make a strong cup of tea!
  • 7.05am to 7.30am - Team Catch Up

A quick catch up with our supervisors to discuss any issues from the previous day and to review any Safety Briefings or topics we are going to be focusing on.

  • 7.30am to 8.00am - Observations

Triage any safety observations that have been raised by or sent to us on the client?site observation and learning app.

  • 8.00am to 9.00am – Attend construction coordination meetings

At these meetings I’m not only interested in any health safety or environmental issues from the current works and interfaces with other contractors, but also interested in what’s planned for work activities that may be several weeks or months away.

We're trying to anticipate and identify likely health, safety and environmental risks so that by the time the activity takes place we have all the required controls and approved documentation in place to execute the activity safely and efficiently.

  • 10.00am to 11.00am - Site Walk 1

It’s important to undertake in-person monitoring of our works, not only from a compliance perspective (formal inspections) but to offer support to our work teams who may feel more comfortable raising a concern or asking questions while you’re there rather than raising a formal observation.

  • 11.00am to 1.00pm - Meetings

EHS meetings with other contractors and the client, sharing of learning and reviewing both lagging and leading indicators (Health Safety and Environmental KPIs).

The consistent collation and review of safety data can help us to spot emerging trends across the project?so that we can see what additional oversight or support and awareness campaigns might be needed to prevent harm.

  • 1.00pm to 1.30pm – Lunch!
  • 1.30pm to 2.30pm – Risk Assessments

Run through a new upcoming work activity with supervisors and project engineer to determine safe working methods and appropriate controls to inform the creation of new Risk Assessment document.

  • 3.30pm to 4.30pm – Site Walk 2

Visit the work team, notice that not all hand tools are tethered – discuss with the team. The lanyards I have previously issued just aren’t right for the tools and the way the guys work - they are at risk of getting tangled.

I need to review the tool lanyards we are using to make sure they are right for the task and the tools. If they are going to cause problems and inefficiencies for the team, we simply won’t get the buy-in we need.

  • 5.00pm to 5.30pm – Diary Management

Make sure I record the key items from my day in my diary and identify priority tasks for myself to complete tomorrow.?
