A day in the life of a Analytical Scientist (IV)
Careers at OXB
Discover more about careers at OXB. Transforming lives through cell and gene therapy.
My name is Aaron, I am an Analytical Scientist (level 4) in the Process Research and Development (PR&D) department, and I am approaching my 2-year anniversary working at Oxford Biomedica. I am responsible for carrying out analytical assays (such as qPCR, ELISA, and cell culture/integration), which supports our upstream and downstream teams within the PR&D team.
My career journey to OXB was slightly unusual. I have a BSc (Hons) from the University of Abertay, Dundee in Forensic Science. I worked as a Forensic DNA scientist for 6 years, before making the move. I had no experience whatsoever in cell and gene therapy, cell culture, and I had never run an ELISA. I was looking for a new laboratory-based challenge, and this role seemed like a perfect opportunity for me.
My successful transition into this field was helped immensely by the supportive work structure at OXB. The work force is diverse, with employees from all different backgrounds and experience, so you’re bound to find someone who can relate with your situation. The product of this work culture is that everyone is eager to help and support. Line managers, department heads, and directors are contactable and more than happy to help. It can be daunting to join a large company in a field that is brand new, but everyone I approached was incredibly helpful.
For me, the best part of my job is the variety. In analytics we run numerous different assays and monitor their performance. If an issue arises, it’s part of our job to investigate the issue, and try to find a resolution. There’s a nice blend of independent and team working. Usually, you will run your assays independently, but the process of analysis, QC checking and problem solving utilises the team around you. Everyone in my department has the same goal – to produce the highest quality of work possible, and to deliver the best product. It’s also a role that you can leave at the office, once your working day is over, you can go home and switch off.
The company is also committed to ensuring personal growth for their employees. Personal development is included in our annual objectives – with multiple different training courses on offer. These training courses are both technical (such as access to scientific conferences) and practical (computer software training, investigative techniques, training techniques etc.)
The company also strives to reward employees for their efforts. I was awarded a promotion less than a year into the role, which was a lovely surprise given my lack of experience in the field, but a nice reward for the hard work that I put in. If you work hard, and produce a quality piece of work, the department makes sure to recognise and award you for your efforts.
The best piece of career advice I can offer, is don’t be afraid to try something new. It can be daunting to search for a new career and step into the unknown. But if you are chasing new opportunities, just try. You may have reservations. You may be nervous. But if you never try, you will never know. There are always options available if something doesn’t work out.
