Day-in-the-life of a Deloitte Summer Intern

Emily Ormond, a final year Commerce student at University College Dublin , is currently immersed in a dynamic internship at 德勤 as a Corporate and International Tax Intern. As an integral member of the Corporate Tax team, Emily actively contributes to client work, gaining invaluable professional experience and insights into the corporate tax sector. Beyond her primary responsibilities, she also embraces a creative role as a Social Media Champion, further enriching her internship journey. Emily's story is one of growth, learning, and active engagement within the supportive environment of 德勤 .

My name is Emily Ormond, I am a final year Commerce student studying at UCD and currently I am a returning tax intern at Deloitte. As a part of my internship, I am working as a Corporate and International Tax Intern for the Corporate Tax team within the department. I will remain an active team member of this team throughout the 12-week duration of the Summer Internship Programme.

As an intern within this department, I am treated as a valued member of the corporate tax team, an integral part of my role consisting is assisting my senior associates and managers with sections of their client work that they assign to me. Thus far, my typical working day consists of attending client meetings and taking notes for management, drafting emails to be sent to client or for partner approval, updating client project progress on the internal tracker, and setting up new clients on the system by completing CETO’s and setting up new client folders on the drive.

Another crucial part of the tax compliance that I have been trained in is the preparation of the Corporate Tax Packs. This involves creating Understanding and Assumption Logs, Query Logs, Corporate Tax Computations, CT1 forms and ROS3 forms for tax filings to Revenue. Working in my position, I have come to realise that my underlying responsibility is to ask questions to ensure I understand the work I am completing to do so in an efficient manner with a high level of accuracy.

As a returning summer intern, I have previously seen the importance and benefits that come from getting involved. For this reason, beyond my contracted responsibilities I have taken on the role of Social Media Champion. Working alongside the employer brand team, we are encouraged to engage with our creativity to develop new content ideas to be shared across the different Deloitte Social Platforms. My involvement as a Champion has been extremely rewarding so far, not only has it pushed me outside of my comfort zone to grow professionally, but it has also given me a sense of empowerment in having a voice in the media content and has also created a pathway for me to form friendships with the other champions.

An additional aspect of my experience has been attending company events. Events such as the Tax All Hands and the Deloitte Summer Social, have been great for networking within my own department or across additional departments in Deloitte, create friendship amongst my internship intake and generally just having a good time out of the office with my colleagues. Based on my current experience of these events I look forward to future events.

Before onboarding, I was both excited and nervous coming into the professional setting of 德勤 , and hoping my tax knowledge coming from college would be enough to understand the work being assigned to me. During orientation I was assigned a buddy and a coach, these individuals really helped me to integrate smoothly into the work culture of Deloitte. Seeing the time and effort put in by both my coach and buddy thus far, demonstrates the supportive learning culture that was discussed during my interview. Their continuous guidance has helped me to build a foundation of tax knowledge, which has increased my confidence in my ability to take on delegated work.

I am currently enjoying my time at Deloitte. Through the formation of connections and the assignment of work, I have gained insights into Corporate Tax and working life at Deloitte. I look forward to the following two months, continuing my learning and grow to then return to UCD in the Autumn for my final year.

Emily's internship at 德勤 has not only equipped her with practical tax expertise but also fostered her professional growth and network within the company. As she prepares to return to UCD for her final year, she eagerly anticipates applying her newly acquired skills and experiences.
