The day I stopped looking for a physio job (and started building my own practice)

I was offered a job back in 2018.

It involved working 2 evenings and a Saturday morning.

And the rate I was offered at the time was $32 per hour.

Commission would be determined post probation.

I knew this clinic was new, and I knew I'd be building up a caseload from scratch.

This was a joke of a setup for an experienced clinician with post-grad qualifications.

Screenshot straight from the contract I was offered, as a 10 year experienced physio, with post-graduate qualifications (July 2018).

Recognising My Worth: A Turning Point

That was the last time I ever sat in front of a prospective employer.

Less than 3 months later, I was off starting my own business.

Why?

Because it was clear to me that my skills weren't valued.

I felt that I'd be building someone else's practice for them.

The Decision to Build My Own Practice

So I built my practice on the premise that physio's would be rewarded from day 1.

All therapists, regardless of experience would have potential to earn well.

To figure out their own version of financial success.

And to drive themselves to where they wanted to be.

It worked out pretty well.

We didn't lose a single physio the entire time I was operating.

And everyone was hitting 6 figures+ within their first 2 years of working.

A New Model for Physio Practices: Reward from Day One

Putting your money where your mouth is can be challenging,

But the lesson here is simple.

Don't be like every other employer on the market.

Be different, reward your team and do so fairly.

How you would like to have been rewarded.

The secret sauce though is having good financial systems in place.

Otherwise you end up overpaying.

PS. Do you have a system in place to ensure you are in fact paying FAIR wages. If the answer is "no", feel free to borrow mine.

Who offered you the job ? Recruiter or the actual physio boss ? Because I was offered 40 dollars plus bonus by a recruiter … but the problem was they wanted a dentist . Some people just don’t do their jobs right ..

If there isn't any incentive (eg equity/profit share/high income) for a physio to join a practice and have to build their own patient list they might as well rent a room and do it for themselves...
