That day I just couldn’t take it anymore…?

That day I just couldn’t take it anymore…?

When I think of the most challenging part of my career, I can remember one moment.?

I was sat in a management meeting.?Disconnected from the conversation.

People were talking, but I wasn’t listening.

I was somewhere else. “Am I actually here?”, I said to myself.?

“What am I doing?!”

Like some out-of-body experience, I knew something was wrong.?

Being dumped

I was always engaged in business conversations. But this time, I’d lost my mojo.?

People experience this type of situation in relationships.?

One day you’ll be ok. The next you get a strange feeling in your stomach like you want to run away.?

Being dumped at high school over your lunch break isn’t nice. One minute the relationship was fine, and now the other person had a change of heart.?

Sometimes it can feel like this in your career. Like a switch gets turned off.

Losing purpose

I can’t remember a specific day or time when I lost my purpose. It happened gradually, over weeks and months.?

Tasks started to demotivate me. I started to become cynical about decisions made by the business.?

Usually, my energy levels were always good. I was driving sales teams in the 8 am meeting.?

Picking people up when they were down. The stuff that I always loved doing.?

But now I couldn’t find the energy to perform. What was happening to me??

Career burnout and the purpose connection

Most of the time, we associate burnout with stress.?

Whilst this is true for the most part, burnout isn’t always created by a crazy workload or a demanding job.

If you feel detached from the world around you, it could be a sign that you’re experiencing career burnout.

You don’t agree with what’s going on around you. Feeling like you don’t have anything in common with your colleagues and bosses.

You feel out of place.?

This is classic cynicism. Something anyone can experience.

And it may be that you’ve simply lost your purpose. You don’t understand why you’re getting up for work anymore.?

The job has become mundane. You don’t have inspiring goals to work towards.?

This is how losing purpose can trigger burnout.?

Losing your spark

When you lose passion for work, everything goes downhill.?

Exhaustion means you check out. There’s not enough energy to do meaningful work.?

You stop turning up to meetings with the same ideas. Colleagues notice you’re not the same.

Here are 3 examples of a career WITH purpose:?

  • You're doing something you're PASSIONATE about (work GIVES you energy)
  • It matches your talents & personal values (using your natural skills)?
  • It contributes to the world around you (serving a PURPOSE)

When I sat in that management meeting I realised I’d lost purpose.?

After 8 years of dedication, promotions, money, and success, I started to question everything.

I was burned out. Constantly complaining to my wife.

Looking back, I can see why I’d lost purpose. And why it triggered my career burnout.?

The two are linked. Career burnout and losing purpose go hand in hand.?

If you’re starting to feel like you may be experiencing something similar, ask yourself this:?

Does my career serve a purpose??

And if the answer is either ‘No’ or ‘Don’t know’ you should reach out.?
