THE DAY I GOT ROBBED!
Read and avoid cheap road robbery...
If I was ever told someone could go through me that easily, I would have argued all day. In fact, I remember discussing issues like this with friends; I would brag about being a Lagos boy. I'll be like: "Me ke, all these local tricks are cheap for a lag boy like me." Not knowing that my day of reckoning is on its way.
On this fateful day, I was quick to set out. It was a Friday during Ramadan. I never knew the devil could be set loose at me. I got a leap for a job placement I have been eyeing for a while. it was supposed to be a trial for me with the materials that would be handed over to me.
I sorted for the best native attire in my wardrobe, well-ironed and looking like a federal senator with a well-patterned Tajia cap to fit.
I got to the place scheduled for the brief meeting and handing over of the trial materials. I was very high in spirit. My dream job is almost here.
Everyone at the venue complimented my native attire. The supervisor who was to oversee the whole process especially called me an Alhaji all through our conversation.
He reminded me of how important the materials were and that I should handle them discreetly and then we departed.
I guess this was when the devil mailed his agents to get ready for me...
I hastily took a bike heading to Mokola Ibadan, since my destination was Iwo Road. and from Mokola, a keke napep tricycle heading to my final destination.
While in transit, my phone rang a couple of times. Maybe I shouldn't have picked up the call. Maybe that day's Ramadan wouldn't have turned to "dry fasting."
My phone rang the second time and then I accepted the call. It was the supervisor. He called to remind me of how discreet those materials were. I told him I was in transit and that I will call him later and he obliged, but then hell was just a few seconds to go loose…
As alert as I always claim to be. As per “the sharp Lagos boy,” I never knew the devil's grandchildren were in action from a distance. They have been monitoring me from Mokola when I highlighted from a bike (I was giving them the Alhaji Kano vibe I guess) and just as I was bringing my hands down after receiving the call, I felt a sudden grasp in my left ear.
Alas, My phone has just been stolen!
I was dumbfounded for a few seconds before I could gather the courage to raise an alarm. The attack was carried out by 2 middle-aged men who had been monitoring me from a bike before actually grasping my phone.
Try to read this till the end so that you don't fall victim because there is still more…
Now, my loss did not end there. Remember, I had the trial materials with me?
So the Keke driver advised me to go take a bike so that I could follow up with the thieves as they fled. Mumu me! I quickly followed, not knowing he was part of the syndicate targeting the bag I had (they thought it was valuable to them) and immediately I highlighted, he sped off.
Then, I'm there standing in the middle of the road and at the same time remembering I had left the ‘discreet material’ in the Keke napep.
This was a few minutes before 6:00 pm and iftar (breaking off fast) was fast approaching. Then and there at Gate, Ibadan, I understood what just happened to me.
Won ti fi layipo han mi!
I scrambled to borrow a phone to lock my bank accounts but one of my accounts was compromised already…
That day, I knew all the agberos at Gate, Ibadan. I knew the daily routine of all keke napep following that route but all efforts were to no avail
Morals: Whenever you set out for your daily 2k, always stay vigilant of the bus, bike or keke napep you patronize. Always look back at least every 20 minutes to observe the pattern of movements behind you, you may be a soft target for ro**ery or kidn****** (God forbid). Always know your account number off hand so that you can do the needful when such an issue arises. Desist from making phone calls or pressing your phone while in transit
PS: A good samaritan later found the discreet materials and traced the office where I collected them from but my phone is gone for real
