On the third day of the waxing moon in the month of Vaishakh, when the sun is at its highest position in Aries and faces directly opposite the bright Vishakha nakshatra in Libra, people celebrate Akshaya Tritiya. The term "Akshaya" means "indestructible," highlighting the day's focus on enduring growth and everlasting qualities.
The month of Vaishakh gets its name from the Vishakha nakshatra. Vaishakha, derived from the Sanskrit ????? (Vi?ākha), is composed of the prefix ?? (vi), meaning "dividing," and ??? (?ākha), meaning "branch" or "shoot." This translates to "branched" or "forked," symbolising growth and expansion. The name Vaishakha, sometimes spelled ????? (vai?ākha), reflects this nature of branching out and spreading.
This nakshatra is ruled by Jupiter. The deveta of this nakshatra is Indrāgni, which represents the powerful and transformative force of lightning, symbolising both physical light and spiritual and intellectual enlightenment.

The imagery of lightning embodies rapid expansion, splitting, and shooting growth, like roots and shoots that flourish and regenerate. Therefore, the divine fire of lightning serves as a potent metaphor for regeneration and the dynamic spread of life's energy and potential, empowering this nakshatra for purposeful growth.
Vishakha's symbols, an archway and a potter's wheel, deeply represent spiritual and personal development. The archway symbolises a gateway through spiritual barriers, transitioning from one state of being to another in a transformative way. The potter's wheel symbolises the gradual evolution of the soul through experience, as well as the limitless possibilities for transformation.
The first three padas of Vishakha are in Tula Rashi, associated with rebirth and linked to the seventh house of the horoscope. The fourth pada, known as the Moksha Pada, falls under Vrishchika Rashi, which represents renewal and transformation, corresponding to the eighth house.
On Akshaya Tritiya, we pray to Guru, the ruling planet of Vishakha, to protect the knowledge one has gained in this lifetime. These prayers, accompanied by the Mrityunjay mantra, focus on the continuous growth and preservation of knowledge to enhance the soul's journey through successive lifetimes. This aligns with Vishakha's themes of growth and nurturing life's potential under divine guidance. So let us invoke the Guru's energy with this mantra ? ??? ?? ????? ?????????? ??? ?? ??? ? and pray for eternal wisdom.
