The day after
In this difficult time, let me share my hope: the light of Israel will overcome the darkness of Hamas and others like them. The massacre that happened in Israel on 7th of October resembles horrors of the Holocaust. But this time is different: Israel will defend itself.
In my eyes, the comparison to the Holocaust runs deeper than that. Gaza city under the rule of Hamas is like Germany under the rule of Nazis. Hatred towards Jews is learnt from young age, and nothing else can grow there.
From what I read, Israeli government gave a "carrot" to Hamas in the form of expanded work permits for Gaza's people in Israel, and approval for Qatar funds. What Hamas showed by their act is that for them the murder of Jews trumps over the prosperity of their people.
Revenge is what comes to mind when watching unabridged atrocities committed by Hamas. In my reserve duty, I met a young woman who goes from funeral to funeral this week because she lost 6 friends. She says she was peace-monger before, but not any longer. I can understand her.
However, I don't see the revenge to be the end goal. Better and safer future is. Hamas and Iranian proxies have to be annihilated to give a chance to something else. It is a difficult task as American experience in Iraq and Afghanistan have shown.
My hope for the day this war is over is that the fate of Gaza will be like the fate of Germany after WW2 - rebuilt after destruction with the help of nations, and with new leaders who choose peace over war.

1 年Amen, Vladi. Our challenge as Israelis, Jews, and frankly humans, is to walk the tightrope of doing what must be done to eradicate this unfathomable evil without losing our humanity in the process. I have no doubt we'll figure it out, because we simply can't afford not to. If it's happened once, it can happen again. And if Israel's history has shown anything, it's that we get hard shit done. As you pointed out, the key difference between October 7, 2023 and the pogroms of the past, is that Israel isn't the powerless victim that was the vast majority of Jews under Nazism. We have the physical strength to crush our oppressors, and now it is clear that we have no choice but to do so. When this is all over, I challenge the despicable supporters of these atrocities to compare the footage: How many decapitated Gazans will there be? How many raped? How many bodies will be paraded through the streets of Israeli cities? We all know the answer. Zero. But they can go ahead and spin that however they want. It won't make an iota of a difference to the situation on the ground and what we do as a nation and a people to secure our basic right to never experience an October 7, 2023 ever again.
