DAY 87: Own Your Actions
"Donavon, what happened?" Grandpa asks me as he looks at me in disbelief.
"What do you mean, Grandpa?" I ask, not sure what the big deal is.
"You are bleeding!" Grandpa says as he hands me a tissue to slow the flow of blood.
"I guess I am," I say as I wince in discomfort as I dab the tissue om my wound.
"How did this happen?" Grandpa asks me.
"Grandpa, I cut myself shaving," I say bluntly.
"Don't you have an electric razor?" Grandpa asks me.
"I think I do, but I can tell you right now that I'm not using it," I say as the sound of that razor made me fear for my life. (I believed that the electric razor could eat my face off.)
"Donavon, there is nothing wrong with an electric razor. I have been using an electric razor and have never gone back to a regular razor," Grandpa explains.
"Thank you for the encouragement, but I will stick to a regular razor," I say politely.
"Do you use shaving cream?" Grandpa presses on.
"No, I don't," I say sheepishly as I knew that shaving cream helps to avoid razor burns or unnecessary cuts.
"Donavon, maybe next time you'll remember that just because you are in a rush doesn't mean that taking shortcuts is a good idea," Grandpa chided me.
"Thank you for the reminder Grandpa," I say as my face turned a deep shade of red.
It is essential to own your mistakes and not blame others or seek out an excuse for your actions. As a leader, you must own your actions, both good and bad. When you take responsibility, you increase the trust that your team has placed on you, as integrity is critical.
Yes, sometimes it is embarrassing to admit a mistake. When you can laugh at the silly things that happen from time to time, you will become a more influential leader to connect with your team.
