Day 7: Occupational licensing means Santa can’t deliver flowers or makeovers
By Shoshana Weissmann
Uncertain national governance has allowed Santa’s workshop to thrive in the North Pole, but delivery of goods and services is still limited by local law.
?Occupational licensing in the United States hampers the ability of Santa Claus to deliver presents. For example, due to Louisiana’s occupational license for florists, Santa may not deliver flower arrangements for Christmas to people in the state. Have you ever wondered why Santa has never given you or someone you know a makeover or manicure for Christmas? That’s because of occupational licensing, too. Taxidermy is widely licensed enough so that it is not worthwhile for Santa to invest in the creation of taxidermy-based gifts. Which is a shame, because Etsy offers a wide selection.?
Consider all the resources Santa would have to waste in order to comply with all of these regulations. It’s not worth it for a global NGO such as Santa’s operation to acquire more licenses than he needs across the world and just in the United States. By removing unnecessary occupational licenses, Santa can bring more joy to the world.
