Day 67 of 100 Days of Growth: Rediscovering the Familiar—A Review of Look Again

Day 67 of 100 Days of Growth: Rediscovering the Familiar—A Review of Look Again

In our fast-paced lives, it's easy to become desensitised to the world around us. We often overlook the everyday wonders and subtle nuances that make life rich and meaningful. Recently, I read "Look Again: The Power of Noticing What Was Always There" by Tali Sharot and Cass R. Sunstein, a fascinating exploration of how we can regain our sense of wonder and attentiveness.

This book resonated deeply with me, especially in light of the themes I've been exploring in my recent articles.

The Habit of Overlooking

Sharot, a neuroscientist, and Sunstein, a legal scholar, delve into the psychology and neuroscience behind habituation—the process by which we become accustomed to stimuli in our environment. They explain how both positive and negative experiences can fade into the background over time, leading us to take things for granted or miss important signals.

This concept ties back to my reflections in Day 64 of 100 Days of Growth: Enhancing Habits with Rituals—From Atomic Habits to The Ritual Effect. Just as small habits can lead to significant changes, being mindful of our routines can prevent us from becoming numb to our surroundings.

Reawakening Our Senses

The authors suggest that by introducing small changes into our routines or altering our perspectives, we can "dishabituate" ourselves. This means breaking the cycle of familiarity to rediscover the richness in our daily lives. Whether it's changing our route to work, engaging in new social activities, or practising mindfulness, these adjustments can heighten our awareness and appreciation.

This idea complements the insights I shared in Day 65 of 100 Days of Growth: Embracing Rest and Unexpected Discoveries ?????? , where unexpected events led me to new experiences and a deeper appreciation for the present moment.

Practical Insights for Everyday Life

What sets Look Again apart is its blend of scientific research and practical advice. Sharot and Sunstein provide relatable examples, such as modifying workplace habits or rethinking our social media usage, to illustrate how minor tweaks can lead to significant improvements in our happiness and productivity.

Similarly, in Day 66 of 100 Days of Growth: Celebrating Behaviours and Outcomes—Finding the Right Balance with the Celebration Grid , I discussed the importance of recognising both our actions and their outcomes. By noticing and adjusting our behaviours, we can foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Personal Reflections

Reading this book provided me with a fresh perspective on how to enrich my daily life. It illuminated the possibilities that exist when we choose to see the familiar in new ways. Inspired by their insights, I've started making conscious efforts to notice the details around me—like the changing colours of the seasons or the subtle expressions on colleagues' faces during meetings. These small shifts have already begun to add depth and joy to my everyday experiences.

This practice aligns with the mindfulness and intentionality I've been cultivating throughout this 100-day journey, emphasising the value of being present and attentive.

Why You Should Read Look Again

If you're interested in psychology, neuroscience, or simply looking to add more depth to your everyday life, this book offers valuable perspectives. It's a reminder that by actively choosing to see what's always been there, we can enhance our creativity, relationships, and overall satisfaction.

Continuing the Journey

As I progress through this 100-day growth journey, Look Again reinforces the interconnected themes of habit formation, mindfulness, and embracing new perspectives that I've explored in previous articles. By integrating these insights, we can foster personal and professional growth in meaningful ways.
