Day 6 - The Role of Sound, and Sound Methodology, in HSE Training

As I head home to Cape Town today after a successful shoot, I wanted to share a quick close-off.
Six days of filming health and safety videos for a worldwide oil and gas company, and 18 installations later, we leave Luanda Airport and head back to home ground.
What now?
The work has only just started!?
Once we’re home, post-production begins. We will continue to design and develop the raw film, and shape it into the finished training material.?
Why sound is the first step in post-production?
Even before we begin editing the videos, we start with the overall sound design. We also capture voice-overs for the animated characters and avatars.?
Accessible to all. Because we want many people, from many language groups, to benefit from the health and safety training material, we create scripts in both English and Portuguese. We also have subtitles included in the project, at no extra charge. We add all of this when the scripts have been signed-off.
This ensures we honour the DEIA principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and access into our projects.
At this time, we also work on the overall look and feel of the videos by developing a treatment to be applied to all. We do this at the start, not at the end.??

Orchestral Communication
I cannot stress how important it has been to keep communication channels open and freely flowing with the client and our team.
This is the only way we ensure they are involved in all phases of E-ADDIE - from the initial engagement with client and analysis of the need, to the design, development, and then implementation of the course material, and finally, in the evaluation of the material’s efficacy through UAT.
Methodical Creativity
It sounds counter-intuitive: methodical creativity.?
But we find that our methodology keeps us seeking out creative solutions.?
We push the boundaries of what we have done before, and what the client imagines is possible, to deliver world class video and training content.
Closing thoughts
As we approach the runway to land, I am excited that this project is just about to take off.?
Look out for some exciting examples of our new animation techniques, 360 video, drone footage, and motion graphics. As well as our use of music and sound effects to hold an audience's attention.
