Day 6 of the 12 Days of Networking - HOSTING A VIRTUAL NETWORKING SESSION

Networking is more important than ever — and virtual spaces offer incredible opportunities to connect. Whether you're exploring career opportunities, growing your business, or fostering relationships, hosting a virtual networking session can be a great way to build authentic connections. Look around, it is happening right here in LinkedIn every single day.

Hosting a virtual networking session is an excellent way to position yourself as a leader in your field while creating live connections - it really is the best case win/win! It allows you to build relationships, exchange insights, and help others navigate shared challenges or opportunities. By facilitating conversations, you not only expand your network but also foster a sense of community and collaboration.

You know you want to host one! Here’s how to plan, organize, and host a successful session—while attracting the right attendees.

Step 1: Define Your Purpose

  • Ask yourself: What’s the goal of this session? Who do I want to attend?
  • Are you helping job seekers exchange ideas? Connecting professionals in a specific field? Fostering conversations about industry trends?

?? A clear purpose sets the tone for the session and attracts the right people, if you put thought into these pieces first. Keep the purpose front and center!

Step 2: Choose a Format That Works Not sure how to structure your session? Try these ideas:

  • ?? Virtual Power Hour: Invite participants to share quick tips or lessons learned. Each person contributes one actionable insight.
  • ?? Topic-Focused Discussions: Choose a hot topic, like "Navigating Job Search Strategies for 2024" or "Breaking Into Leadership Roles."
  • ?? Skills Exchange: Use breakout rooms where attendees share a skill or offer advice on a specific challenge.
  • ??? Guest Speaker Sessions: Bring in an expert to share insights for 15–20 minutes, followed by Q&A.
  • ?? Storytelling Hour: Encourage participants to share short career stories—wins, challenges, or lessons learned.

Step 3: Get People to Attend Attracting the right attendees is crucial. Here are some ideas:

  • ?? Leverage Your Network: Personally invite LinkedIn connections, professional groups, or alumni networks.
  • ?? Create an Eye-Catching Invite: Use an engaging title, such as “Virtual Networking Hour: Build Connections & Share Tips.” Include clear details about the purpose, date, time, and benefits for attendees.
  • ?? Promote on Social Media: Share the invite on LinkedIn, Twitter, or Facebook, and encourage others to spread the word.
  • ?? Collaborate with a Co-Host: Partner with someone who can bring in their audience, doubling your reach.
  • ?? Offer an Incentive: Provide a free resource, like a guide, worksheet, or session recording.
  • ?? Tap Into Groups: Share your invite in relevant LinkedIn or Facebook groups.

Pro tip: Use a registration link to track interest and send reminders!

Step 4: Create a Welcoming Environment Engagement is key!

  • ? Start with an Icebreaker: Ask a fun question, such as “What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?”
  • ? Set Ground Rules: Encourage introductions, active participation, and mindful timekeeping.
  • ??ENGAGE the audience: Even if you want to maintain speaking (think about this when you consider the topic), ensure that you have activities and avenues for folks to actively participate.

Step 5: Provide Real Value Make your session impactful by:

  • Sharing useful resources like articles, tools, or job leads.
  • Facilitating meaningful discussions tailored to the group.
  • Encouraging connections and follow-ups among attendees.

Step 6: Follow Up After the session:

  • ?? Send a Thank-You Message: Share takeaways, resources, or insights from the event.
  • ?? Encourage Connection: Remind participants to connect with each other and keep the conversation going.

?? Ready to Host Your Own? Hosting a virtual networking session doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right purpose, format, and promotion, you’ll create a space where meaningful connections thrive.

Have you hosted or attended a virtual networking session recently? What worked well—or what didn’t — I’d love to hear! Sharing your thoughts will get things rolling!
