Day 3 of the #IkigaiChallenge – Childhood Dreams:

Day 3 of the #IkigaiChallenge – Childhood Dreams:

I had a few childhood dreams:

  • A vet
  • An actor (the new Lara Croft)
  • An interior decorator

Quite a broad spectrum, and in a way, I did reach them before settling down and choosing one to grow into and reach my fullest potential.

As an actor, I took classes with Brumilda van Rensburg to get my career started. I landed a few auditions but never made it past round two—just the occasional featured role.

Then, one day, Brumilda called and asked if I’d be interested in voice acting. Being me, Being who I am, I said yes without fully knowing what it entailed. One thing led to another, and before I knew it, I got my first real acting job as a puppeteer and voice actor for a children’s theater piece.

It was then I realized that acting, as much as I loved it, wouldn’t pay the bills. I loved entertaining people and bringing smiles to their faces, but it wasn’t going to support a family.

So, I moved on to the next dream: interior des ign. I enrolled and started working toward my diploma.

As for being a vet, this dream turned into helping animals in other ways. While still looking for interior design work, I took an admin job at Wetnose Animal Rescue. Over time, I found myself transitioning from admin into creating marketing videos for them.

During this time, I also got another voice acting audition—not for one character, but for several. I ended up voicing four characters! It felt like a breakthrough, and I was excited about this new chapter.

With the voice-over job in hand and Shaun needing more help with his business, it was time to move on from Wetnose. I started working with him, creating videos for clients and writing concepts for promo videos. Then, the unexpected happened—COVID turned everything upside down. But we made it through, and today, our business is thriving and growing!

I still love writing concepts for clients, planning entire TVCs from scriptwriting to storyboarding and set design. Looking back, I realise I had to go through all these different chapters in my life to reach my fullest potential. And the Lara Croft dream? Yes, I never let a Tomb Rider game slide!
