Day 3 - Control what you can control

I am committing to writing daily for a year (365 articles) to express my thoughts and ideas on business and probably as a bit of therapy. These quick articles share my thoughts for the day. They are pieces to a puzzle that we call business and I hope you enjoy them.

Day 3 - Control what you can control

I had a conversation with someone today that made me realize how much I apply this to my personal and business life on a daily basis. Life will find a way to toss the unexpected at you and make it so you really can't do anything about it. Our lives are full of events that are completely out of our control and they are often events that profoundly affect our lives and usually not in a positive way. I'm a problem-solver at heart and the idea that there are problems I can not solve is a really hard pill to swallow. I can do it but I struggle with it. One of the few things that has brought me solace is to control what I can control. Despite the chaos that may be running rampant in the world around me I will take control where and when I can. I will do what I can to make things better. It may not be much but it makes me feel better to take action and know I did everything in my power to improve the situation or improve something in my life and the lives of those around me. I believe this is especially important in business. After Covid and the corresponding restrictions, supply chain issues, inflation, rising interest rates and now the looming shadow of recession you need to be focused on controlling what you can control in your business. There is nothing productive in worrying about what you can't control. Try this principle out in your life and your business and you might find some solace and comfort as well.
