Day 28 / Routine / 91 Perfect Days Challenge.

Today's reading is titled; Routine.

We are creatures of habit, there is no denying it. Even the most insistent people will tell you that they absolutely hate routine, and have some serious routines going on in their lives.

Daily rituals are simply part of being human. It`s not routine that makes us miserable. It`s a bad routine that sips away at our juice.

Forming good habits is a lifesaver, it allows you to do things on autopilot. No conscious thought is needed. You may or may not be aware of the number of activities you do that require very little thinking. We form these habits all the time. Simple stuff like brushing our teeth or the way that we reverse our car out of the driveway.

Any behaviour can become a habit if you repeat it enough times. All you need to do is to create a habit loop.

A habit loop has 3 main stages. Firstly you are triggered by a cue. This can be anything. It can be a scent, it can be an emotion or even a thought.

The second part is going through the routine. Or the act of the habit. And then lastly dopamine is released in the brain`s pleasure center and your action is rewarded. Even your negative habits are rewarded.

That's why positive and negative habits are both equally hard to break. If you don't consciously set out to break a limiting or negative habit. You`re more than likely to have that habit for the rest of your life. Luckily we can change a habit once it`s been formed. The biggest risk you take when learning a new habit is to start too big.

Learn the fundamentals of the habit before you try to do the advanced skills. Start very very small. Instead of deciding to drink 2 litres of water every day. Start by drinking half a glass of water with every meal. It may sound silly, but by making your minimum requirement as easily achievable as possible. You are eliminating resistance to activity that you want to become a habit. Yes, start very small.

Next, you want to be incredibly specific. Instead of saying that you want to eat really healthy. Rather say you want to eat 3 portions of fruit and vegetables extra per week. Instead of saying that you want to exercise more, say that you want to work out for 15 minutes a day. Then make sure that you enjoy the new habit. Savor the action. Be present at the moment. Allow yourself to feel the reward of your new action. Have a plan for when you slip up. If it all falls apart or you skip a day just keep moving forward.

Don't stop if you have one little setback. Everything is not lost. You don't have to start all over again. Simply continue working on your habit as if nothing happened.

Breaking a negative habit is a little more tricky. You need to keep your eye on it. You need to replace your bad habit with a positive one. So the trigger that used to send you into autopilot for this negative habit triggers a new positive action instead. Or else you are going to have a bad time.

The neural pathways for that bad habit will be there forever. With lots of willpower, discipline, and time. They won't be as active. But you can still be triggered at any time. Indulging in the negative behaviour just once after it has broken can reawaken the cognitive script for that behaviour. And you`ll have to break the habit all over again. You may need to use some force to get you going.

But it`s your habits that will keep you going for years to come. So make sure they are good ones, that will move you forward towards your goals and not away from them.

Always remember that in order to create a perfect life, you must make sure that today will be a perfect day. And in creating perfect days, there will never be another day in your life that won't require responsibility, intent, time, effort, right mindsets, and massive massive action.

Consistently doing what needs to be done is the only way to get the results you want.

Every action that you take today will either move you one step closer or one step away from your goals. Therefore if you want to guarantee that you live a massively successful life.
