Day 2 - Set Limits

The books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John repeatedly highlight the amount of time Jesus spent alone—away from the disciples, the crowds, and ministry matters. The frequent mention of this behavior suggests that Jesus was a master at setting boundaries with His time, taking moments for Himself and for prayer. Likewise, if we want to effectively manage our time and make our greatest contribution to the world, we must also establish clear boundaries in our schedule.
Set clear boundaries in your schedule for spiritual disciplines, family time, and work. It can be helpful to plan your time at home and work similarly. For me, a regular routine helps maintain the "work-life balance." Every day, I go to work at 5:30 a.m. and return home at 5:00 p.m. This predictable schedule gives me clear boundaries within which I force myself to focus on my tasks. Does my work ever end? Of course not. But the same would happen if I worked until 5:00, 6:00, or even 10:00 p.m. It is impossible to finish everything. Having a strict end time in my schedule ensures I have time to be with my wife, children, attend church, study, attend for personal daily goals, etc.
If you don’t take time to set boundaries in your schedule, someone else will. If you haven’t done so yet, follow Jesus’ example and establish clear limits within which you can use your time wisely. This is the first step to controlling your calendar and managing your time well.
