“Time alone is really essential, to get away and contemplate, think, and wonder.†— Jim Rohn
Yesterday I shared that there are 6 things that we need to 'recover' from daily, for optimum wellbeing and results. Day 1 was all about recovery from work. Just as you need recovery from work you also need some healthy recovery from people. Even if it’s just 20–60 minutes per day, you need some time to think, reflect, ponder, and plan.
Why Alone Time is Good a Thing
I often wondered about the expression ‘distance makes the heart grow fonder’ The truth is .. it really does. Personal space is what keeps us feeling refreshed. Taking time out enables us to relax, recharge our batteries, learn about ourselves, and return to our relationships and our work feeling calm and positive. Humans need time to be selfish. Well-spaced and considered selfishness is actually beneficial to our lives.
By taking some time to solely think about ourselves, we grow our self-awareness. We give our minds time to reset, to find clarity. It can be a little daunting, but the result is that you learn what drives you, what excites you, and what motivates you. This new-found self-knowledge is a beautiful thing and it can have dramatic and sustained benefits.
The Signs You Need Alone Time
Everyone has their own unique traits that bubble to the surface when in need of some personal space. You need to learn to recognise your own signs, if you’re not sure the general rule is that if you start pushing people away then you need some time alone.
One word answers - conversations are supposed to be fun two-way social interactions. If you're not trying then you do not want to be there.
Itching to be elsewhere - if you are out and you desperately want to be home then do everyone a favour and leave. Take some time for yourself.
Unexplained moodiness - feeling grumpy for no reason? You probably need some time alone
In her book, The Creator’s Code: The Six Essential Skills of Extraordinary Entrepreneurs, Amy Wilkinson details her interviews with some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs. She found that many of them purposefully schedule time to be by themselves.
For example, billionaire Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx, drives a fake 40-minute commute to work despite living 5 minutes from work. She does this to give herself time to “think.†Other people literally schedule 60-minute “power-hours†in the middle of their day to think creatively and strategically.
How can you incorporate some alone time in to your day?
