Day 2: Losing a Breast, Gaining Strength – My Personal Breast Cancer Journey on My Professional Pathway

Introduction

As we continue through Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I’m honored to share more of my personal journey with you. Today, I want to dive deeper into a significant moment in my battle with breast cancer—one that tested not only my health but my identity as a woman and a leader.

For high-performing women, facing a breast cancer diagnosis comes with its own set of challenges. We’re used to making quick decisions, solving problems, and leading teams. But when you’re forced to make deeply personal and irreversible choices about your body, the experience is uniquely humbling and, at times, overwhelming.

The Weight of Critical Decisions

Following the diagnosis of cancer in my left breast, I met with an oncologist to discuss my treatment options. One of the hardest things for an executive to face is relinquishing control. As leaders, we’re conditioned to navigate ambiguity and make difficult calls daily, but deciding on a mastectomy is a different kind of pressure—one that cuts to the core of your identity.

The initial recommendation was a mastectomy, with no option to spare the nipple due to the proximity of the cancer to the breast tissue. A double mastectomy was also offered to reduce the risk of cancer in my right breast. I remember feeling the weight of this decision as if I were standing at a crossroads with no clear direction.

In true leadership fashion, my first instinct was to gather more data. I sought a second opinion, but ultimately, the conclusion was the same: a mastectomy was necessary. The decision felt final, and no matter how many opinions I sought, I couldn’t escape the reality of what was ahead. At that moment, I wasn’t just making a decision for my health; I was also grappling with the profound emotional impact of losing a breast—a part of myself that had always been tied to my femininity, even if I hadn’t realized it fully before.

The Emotional Battle Beneath the Surface

In my professional world, I had spent years establishing myself as confident and capable. But in private, I carried long-standing insecurities about my body. As a young woman, I had been teased about my breast size. In a society where femininity is often hypersexualized, I had always felt a sense of inadequacy. Now, the decision to remove one of my breasts brought those insecurities to the surface.

As executive women, we are often seen as unshakable, but the truth is, no amount of professional success can shield us from the very human emotions of grief and loss. For me, the news of my mastectomy triggered a period of intense self-reflection. I realized that I had to redefine my sense of self-worth and embrace my uniqueness—not only as a survivor but as a woman whose body was changing in ways I couldn’t control.

Embracing Knowledge as Empowerment

Just as I would prepare for a critical professional meeting by gathering facts and insights, I turned to education as a tool for empowerment. I made it my mission to fully understand the surgery, reconstruction options, and long-term outcomes. Knowledge allowed me to make choices aligned with my values and gave me a sense of control over a process that felt deeply uncertain.

For leaders, education is a familiar path to empowerment. We thrive on being informed, and in this case, understanding my options became a lifeline as I navigated the complexities of both my physical health and emotional well-being.

Reevaluating Beauty and Femininity

Facing a mastectomy forced me to reevaluate my understanding of beauty. In my world, appearances are often synonymous with power and presence. But I learned that true beauty isn’t about physical perfection—it’s about resilience, courage, and the ability to rise above life’s most difficult moments. The scars I would bear from this journey didn’t diminish my strength as a leader or my femininity as a woman. Instead, they became symbols of survival and empowerment.

Answer to Breast Cancer Empowerment Strategies

From this part of my journey, I want to leave you with three key strategies that helped me, and that can also help executive women navigating similar challenges:

  1. Seek a Second Opinion: In both business and personal health, it’s important to gather all the facts before making a critical decision. Don’t hesitate to seek a second opinion to ensure you’re making the best choice for your long-term well-being.
  2. Embrace Your Uniqueness: As executives, we often strive for perfection, but this journey reminded me that our uniqueness and imperfections are what make us powerful. Embrace who you are, inside and out.
  3. Find Optimism in the Challenges: Even in moments of uncertainty, there’s always a glimmer of hope. While facing the loss of a breast was emotionally difficult, the prospect of reconstruction provided a light at the end of the tunnel. I’ll be sharing more about that in the days to come.

Conclusion

Thank you for joining me on Day 2 of my breast cancer journey. For executive women who find themselves facing this battle, remember that your strength doesn’t just lie in your professional achievements. It’s also in your ability to embrace challenges, make empowered decisions, and redefine beauty and success on your own terms.
