Day 2 of #100daysofwriting Tech Edition - "<Blank> Tech"

First, I would like to start by thanking everyone who has reached out and provided support on this journey. Getting started is the hardest thing to do when you embark on a new adventure. Now my focus is to get better by 1% each time. As the days of writing go on, they will improve.

Now, on to the day's topic, "<Blank> Tech."

"I want to get into tech." "I want a job in IT." "My son/daughter is good with computers. Would you talk to them?" These are all general quotes that I hear all the time.

The problem with these statements is that they are so generic.

My advice: "If you love technology, try complimenting it with something else you love. Everywhere you look, technology is embedded."

My question: What else do you love?

Common Responses: Video Games, Sports, Music, Food, Books, Cars (These are the <Blank> Tech.)

Next step, let's expand on it and :

  • Video Game Tech: Recently, with Minecraft and Roblox, everyone wants to be a video game programmer. That's all fun and games, but I'm unfamiliar with the success rate of these roles. (No pun intended.) However, playing video games can teach you a lot about troubleshooting, networking, latency, and other tech skills. You can learn many skills by trying to program your own game.
  • Sports Tech: I grew up a huge Cleveland Indians Fan and played baseball all year round. Today, there is so much technology in sports. One of my favorite companies, Daktronics, is a world leader in designing, engineering, and manufacturing digital LED display technology and audio systems. Everytime I go to a sporting event, I look for the manufacturer of the display. Think about the digital design, programming, networking, security, and audio visual support it takes to operate a scoreboard at a major venue.

Or, if you love data, Google manages 15 MILLION data points for MLB Baseball.

  • Automotive Tech: My dad worked for General Motors for 33 years, and I've heard plenty of stories about those years. Today, there are so many electronics and computers inside a motor vehicle that you practically need a Computer Science degree to be a mechanic.

Today's vehicles can contain over 100 computers and millions of lines of software code. These computers are all networked together and can operate all aspects of your vehicle.

Consider it and let us know if you want to join #TeamFranklinCounty.

In summary, fill in the blank. Do something that you are passionate about and love.

I once had an intern that was getting into IT solely because the pay was good, not because he cared much about technology itself. He really didn’t have an interest outside of the paycheck (and you could tell). I warned him at the time: “If you go into IT for the money, and you don’t actually like technology, those dollars will be the hardest dollars you’ll ever make.” You don’t have to be a hardcore tech head, as there are many ways to apply technology in service of other things, just as you pointed out Juan Torres, MBA, PMP. But you need at least SOME affinity or some joy that’s sparked by solving problems with hardware, software, and systems thinking.

As a mom of a 14yr old, I'd say your right, what tech world do we dive into...it is endless. We've already been looking at tech jobs. His high-school promotes it, they have a jobs in tech forum, and gaming club where they build as well as play. One field we researched was drone engineer, designer! Thanks Juan Torres, MBA, PMP
